In the mid-season finale forLegends of Tomorrowearlier this month, fans were quite shocked to learn thatRip Hunter(Arthur Darvill) is actually alive and well, working as a film director in Los Angeles in the year 1967. Many fans had assumed he was dead all season long, until the final moments of the mid-season finale showed that Rip Hunter directing a movie about himself, entitledRip Hunter, Time Master. Little else was known about the back half of Season 2, until now. Today, we have a new report revealing that an actor has been hired to portray iconic filmmakerGeorge Lucas, who will surface in the mid-season premiere.
Entertainment Weeklyreports thatMatt Angel(Grimm) will be playing this younger version ofGeorge Lucas. This will be the ninth episode ofLegends of Tomorrow Season 2, which is set to air Tuesday, January 24 at 9 PM ET, in the show’s new time slot, directly followingThe Flash. Entertainment Weekly caught up with executive producerMarc Guggenheim, who reveals that this episode will “deeply affect” the Legends, especially Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Nate Heywood (Nick Zano). Here’s what the executive producer had to say about howGeorge Lucasfits into the story.
“Because of circumstances, the time aberration in episode 209 isGeorge Lucasquits film school. As a result, he never makesStar WarsorRaiders of the Lost Ark. As a result, Ray, who became an engineer because of Star Wars, and Nate, who became a historian because of Raiders, slowly start to lose their brilliance, because those things that inspired them to become who they are didn’t exist.”
Marc Guggenheimdescribes the story as “Flowers for Algernonwith Ray and Nate,” adding that this is one of the most ambitious episodes that the producers have ever attempted. He even compared the “crazy level” with the now-iconic 1970s bar fight scene from the series premiere last year, claiming that it’s even more insane then that sequence. Here’s what he had to say about watching a rough cut of the episode.
“We were watching a cut of it, and I said toGreg Berlantithat 209 is either going to be the episode where we’ll say that the show found a new gear in terms of how zany it can be, or it’s the episode that’s going to get us all fired. It really is. You’re laughing out loud, I think with it, but it’s like, ‘Are we really doing this?’ It’s the ’70s bar fight on steroids. The whole episode is that level of crazy.”
Marc Guggenheimwouldn’t confirm if Rip Hunter has some sort of interaction with this youngerGeorge Lucas, played byMatt Angel, on the mid-season premiere ofDC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Given that Rip is now working as a director, it seems likely that his path may cross with the youngGeorge Lucas, a decade before he made the firstStar Warsmovie. We’ll certainly have new footage from this mid-season premiere in the new year, as we get closer to the January 24 return ofLegends of Tomorrow.
