A Spy Among Friendsis anaction spy thriller seriesthat aired on ITVX and MGM+ in 2022. This show is a unique entry into the spy genre, bringing back the focus on intrigue and staying away from excessive action. While some viewers may find it difficult to watch for its long stretches without action, its plot and characters are all top-notch, making it an enjoyable ride that pays off satisfyingly. The series is based on a book that shares its name, which was written by Ben Macintyre. This show was directed by Nick Murphy and written by Alexander Cary. There are currently six episodes available for streaming. Let’s see what elements of the show make it such a compelling spy drama.
It Has a Great Premise
The premise ofA Spy Among Friendscenters on two MI6 agents who are close friends. It is set in England in 1963, with the Cold War with Russia going on in the background. One character named Nicholas Elliot is working as an intelligence officer with many successful espionage missions under his belt. He finds support in his mission with his friend Kim Philby, but Nick’s life and career are in danger when he uncovers suspicious circumstances around Kim’s activities. It is revealed that Kim has been secretly working for the Russian KGB and acting as a double agent. Not only that, Kim has defected to the Soviet Union but continues to deny it to his friend, eventually requesting his help to protect him. It turns out that Russians had been infiltrating British intelligence services for decades, and it has only recently been discovered just how deep the rabbit hole goes.
The conceit of two friends on opposite sides makes for a classic and gripping premise that is supported by the rich storyline and plot twists. It asks the viewer to question whether they would betray their country or their friendship, and it doesn’t have an easy answer. It holds back on the actions and explosions of aJames Bond-style spy filmand instead takes notes fromintrigue-heavy spy series likeSlow Horses.

Excellent Performances
This series' second-greatest strength is its stellar performances. It features Emmy-winning actor Damian Lewis as Nicholas Elliot.Guy Pearce, another Emmy Award winner, plays the turncoat character of Kim Philby. The scenes between the lead actors are some of the tensest scenes in the show. The characters feel deep and lived in. You can feel the impact that the Cold War has on their personalities and psyche. The world also feels the effects of continuing in the shadow of the deadly World War II. Each actor delivers a nuanced performance that helps support the feeling of the world being so believable. This show thrives on its atmosphere and intricate plot details, and demands your attention to enjoy everything the show sets out to accomplish fully.
The supporting cast is great as well. Anna Maxwell Martin plays the character of Lily Thomas. Lily has to stand strong in the men’s club, which is the British Intelligence Service. Despite the obstacles to her character, she cuts through even the hardest of spies and delivers an entertaining performance.

Deep Engaging Drama
This show takes a slightly different approach to spy drama. Rather than focusing on expensive action set pieces and close-up camera work, it makes spy espionage and intrigues its primary focus. While this decision may turn off action-hungry viewers, it ultimately creates a gripping show for those who give it a chance. You get to see the collapse of British secret services from every angle and get insight into the complex top players in the spymaster game. The drama is helped by the consistent performances, which never cease to be consistently good to excellent.
Pacing That Feels Right
The series pays homage toTinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,a 1979 BBC dramatization of the Cold War spy era. It leans stylistically and visually on the tropes established during that series, including the pacing. It is a slow burner show that rewards viewer attention with a compelling drama experience. It is the kind of show that really benefits from multiple viewings so that you’re able to catch all the expertly crafted details and plot moments.

Based on a True Story
Another great aspect that keeps you hooked on the series is that it’s based on a true story. This adds a lot of believability to the world the show makers are creating. You never know which detail or plot element the creators added versus what actually happened in history.Guy Pearce said in an interview with Town&Countrythat this drew aspect of the show drew him to his character. He was interested in the psychology of the real person who was left with the choice to betray his country while feeling he had no other choice.
