Is the upcoming DC Comics adventureSuicide Squada live-action retelling of the animatedMinionsmovie? Not really, but it appears the two big screen entities share something in common. While the world ofDespicable Mefinds Gru using little yellow creatures to do his bidding, themain villainat the heart of Warner Bros.' latest comic book adventure has something similar, yet much more sinister, going on. DirectorDavid Ayeris still refusing to name the big bad at the heart ofSuicide Squad, a movie built around super villains. But he does finally tell us the name of the enemies ‘minions’. They are called ‘Eyes of The Adversary’.

That certainly sounds menacing. But who is the Adversary? We don’t know yet. The ‘Eyes’ have been seen in various set photos and in the trailers, though they have had longtime fans stumped, as these mysterious gray baddies don’t look like anything seen in the comic books. DC Films producer Charles Roven had this to say about the minions ofSuicide Squad.

“Let’s just say, when they’re called in to do this mission by Amanda, these are one of the things they encounter. They don’t know how they got here, but they’re weird and dangerous and yet they’re wearing military uniforms.”

There is a character known as The Adversary in DC Comics lore. This force battled Justice League members Superman and Hawkgirl before the Thanagarian invasion. He appeared in the DC aimated seriesJustice League Unlimited. Though, the character was never named on-screen, leaving his identity a blank slate.

Director David Ayer goes onto confirm that when it comes to The Eyes, ‘nobody’s safe’. Some have begun to speculate thatThe Jokeris the main villain at the heart of the movie, butAyerwon’t even begin to hint about that. He does, however, discuss the challenges of bringing this iconic villain to life withTotal Film. About helping Jared Leto rediscover this iconic super villain for all-new audiences, the filmmaker says this.

“You’re looking at one of the best-known villains in western literature. He has to be very respectful and elegantly crafted, because you’re following in the footsteps of giants. He’s very loyal to the canon, but with some modern twists… With Jared, it’s interesting because how do you come at that character? It’s like treading on hallowed ground. It requires a strange combination of both respect and fearlessness. I don’t want to reveal too much about the magic trick…”

Suicide Squadis different than any recent superhero movie. For the sole fact that it assembles a group ofsuper villainsfor an impossible mission. And whileBatmandoes show up to tussle with Deadshot, Joker and Harley, his presence is seen through the eyes of these anti-heroes.David Ayersays this about the challenge of turning the tide, and how that aspect drew him to the director’s chair.

“With a good guy you automatically like them because they do the right thing. But with bad guys it’s more of a creative challenge - How do you get an audience to like a villain? You have to be true to the source material, but at the same time, I want to give the characters a real psychology and make them feel of our world. For me the fun is creating the illusion that you can walk down the street and run into Harley Quinn, or see the Joker driving along.”

Suicide Squadhas one of the biggest ensembles hitting the big screen this summer. Leading the pack isWill Smithas Deadshot,Margot Robbieas Harley Quinn, andJared Letoas The Joker. Bringing up the rear on this all-terrain tactical vehicle of utter mayhem isJoel Kinnamanas Rick Flagg,Jai Courtneyas Captain Boomerang,Cara Delevingneas Enchantress,Karen Fukuharaas Katana,Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbajeas Killer Croc,Jay Hernandezas El DIablo,Adam Beachas Slipknot andViola Davisas Amanda Waller. Also appearing in the movie areIke Barinholtz,Scott Eastwood,Raymond Olubowale,Alex Meraz,Jim Parrack, andCommon. While we’re sure to get at least one more trailer before August 5, and a ton of TV spots and clips, the big bad of this DC Comics adventure won’t be divulged until opening night, as it’s one of the movie’s big secrets. Though, withJesse Eisenbergfinally admitting that he’s putting in an appearance as Lex Luthor, some believe he might be behind it all. We’ll have to wait and see.
