With just eight days left on theStar Wars: The Force Awakenscountdown,Star Warsfever is spreading fast, with some fans alreadylining upnext to the historic TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.Star Wars: The Force Awakenswill be just the beginning, though, with two more sequels and three spinoffs coming in the years ahead. Earlier this month, a new report revealed that LucasFilm has been meeting with a number of unidentified female directors for futureStar Warsmovies. DirectorJ.J. Abramswas asked if there are any specific female directors he would like to see take the helm of aStar Warsmovie, and there is one that he thought of right away,Ava DuVernay. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say toYahoo! Movies.
“One name that immediately comes to mind isAva DuVernay, who I thought did just a mind-blowingly great job withSelma. And getting to know her a little since that movie, she is such a fan of genre films and storytelling, that, my instinct is, even though there are so many other names that I think would also be great, she is my knee-jerk reaction because she loves the world so much and loves this genre and is such a talented storyteller. So if I had a say in any of this, which I don’t, I’d give her whatever she wants.”

Most of the movies followingStar Wars: The Force Awakensalready have filmmakers attached, but there is still one spinoff that doesn’t have a director at the helm. ThisThird Star Wars Spin-Off Movie, rumored to center onBoba Fett, originally hadJosh Trankset to direct before he left the project. No one has been announced to replace him yet, so it’s possible thatAva DuVernaycould throw her hat in the ring for this project, although it isn’t known if she’s even interested in coming aboard.
Earlier this year,Ava DuVernaywas in talks to directMarvel’sBlack Panther, but she eventually parted ways with the project, which is now eyeingCreeddirectorRyan Coogler.Ava DuVernayhasn’t announced what her follow-up toSelmawill be quite yet, so we’ll have to wait and see if she has any interest in tackling theStar Warsuniverse. While she has never directed a genre film before, she does have experience in other ways.

Before she became a director,Ava DuVernayworked in publicity on genre films such as Spy Kids,Spider-Man 2andI, Robot. It’s also worth noting that a report from November claims that Disney and LucasFilm plan on putting out a newStar Warsmovie every year, indefinitely, until fans stop buying tickets, so there will certainly be no shortage of projects, ifAva DuVernaywere to be interested in entering the franchise.
