Shortly after production began onSuicide Squadin Toronto last year, directorDavid Ayershared the first official photo ofJared LetoasThe Joker. The Oscar-winning actor looked quite deranged in the image, which showcased a number of intricate tattoos. We found out, as production continued, that the actor stayed in character the entire team while on the set. While we haven’t heard much from the actor himself about the role, one of his co-stars,Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller, offered some new insight on his bizarre ways in an interview withVanity Fair. Here’s what she had to say about the cast’s first “introduction” to the actor during a rehearsal.

“The Joker. He did some bad things,Jared Letodid. He gave some really horrific gifts. He had a henchman who would come into the rehearsal room, and the henchman came in with a dead pig, and plopped it on the table, and then he walked out. That was our introduction to Jared Leto. Now I’m terrified as a person thinking ‘Is he crazy?’ but the second part was ‘Oh shit! I got to have my stuff together.’ You talk about commitment and then he sends Margot Robbie a black rat. It was still alive in a box. She screamed, and then she kept it.”

We reported last year thatJared Letosent a box of bullets and a dead hog toWill Smith, along with the video ofJared Letoin character as The Joker.Viola Daviscertainly isn’t the first person to speak about the actor’s antics on set.Scott Eastwoodrevealed last year that he didn’t want to approach the actor during production, because he didn’t want to “mess” with his method acting style.Margot Robbie, who playsHarley Quinn, added that she was actually even more scared of seeing the actor without any makeup on, because she got so used to his Joker persona.

Jared Leto’s Joker will be the first iteration of the character shown on the big screen since the lateHeath Ledger’s performance in 2008’sThe Dark Knight. While we’ll have to wait and see if fans respond toJared Leto’s version as much as they did withHeath Ledger’s iconic portrayal, fans have reacted positively to the footage that has been released, especially thesecond trailerthat arrived last month. Since we still have six months left until this superhero adventure hits theaters, hopefully we’ll see much more of this iconic villain.
