Earlier this week, reports surfaced that directorBryan Singerand producerSimon Kinbergconfirmed on theX-Men: Apocalypsecommentary track that the villain of the upcomingWolverine 3is none other than the comic book characterMister Sinister. An exact quote from the commentary track was not provided, but shortly after that story broke,Wolverine 3directorJames Mangoldessentially shot down these reports with a few statements on his Twitter page, joking that the name sounds “kinda corny.” Here’s what he had to say below.
“Uh. Who is Mister Sinister? Sounds kinda corny. Please advise.”
It didn’t take long for a fan to comment, leading the director to elaborate further. When a fan commented that these were “interesting developments,” the director called out news outlets who ran the story based on the commentary track. Here’s what he had to say below, in response to a fan.
“Not really. But kinda funny how a hundred media “news” outlets think a DVD commentary is a source for news headlines.”
It’s worth noting thatJames Mangolddidn’t flat-out deny that Mister Sinister was the villain, so it’s possible that this is all a ruse. After all, during the post credit scene inX-Men: Apocalypse, we see some mysterious men grab a vial of blood belonging to Wolverine, and placing it in an Essex Corp briefcase, the company that is owned by Nathaniel Essex, a.k.a. Mister Sinister. Still, there is no guarantee that Mister Sinister himself will be featured in the movie, or, if he is featured, who may play him.
Oddly enough, there is one beloved actor who recently revealed that he wants to play thisX-Men villain, none other thanBryan Cranston. The actor even mentioned at a film festival appearance forTrumbolast year that he would like to play Mister Sinister, and it seems that he still wants to do so, as he revealed in an appearance on AMC’sGeeking Out. Here’s what the actor had to say, when asked by hostGreg Grunbergabout what villain he would most like to play.
“I’m interested increating a role. I’d love to do something that hasn’t been done before. Lex Luthor, there’s been a lot of that. I’ve been asked to take a look at Commissioner Gordon. It’s like, I would be one in several and I would kind of like to carve out a new identity. Mister Sinister has always been someone…that would be very cool.”
Regardless ofBryan Cranston’s desire to play Mister Sinister, it isn’t known if there are any plans to bring him to the big screen. Still, artist BossLogic took it upon himself to create a new illustration showing whatBryan Cranstonmay look like as Mister Sinister. AfterWolverine 3hits theaters, 20th Century Fox is developingThe New MutantswhileBryan Singerexpressed his interest in reuniting the entire original cast from the firstX-Mentrilogy.
