Plus, writer and director Zach Cregger’s No. 1Weaponsboasts the third highest-grossing opening weekend for a horror film this year, as the must-see movie only trails the premieres ofFinal Destination Bloodlines($51.6 million) and Ryan Coogler’sSinners($45.7 million) in 2025.

The Julia Garner and Josh Brolin-ledWeaponscould do no wrong over its opening weekend, and the film’s success extends far beyond merely its box-office returns, which resulted in a worldwide take of $70 million (viaDeadline). The vast majority of critics doted on Cregger’s horror masterpiece in their reviews, which led toWeaponsregistering a “Certified Fresh” 95% Tomatometer rating against 228 reviews posted to Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the fans' enthusiasm for the film, not to mention its watercooler-worthy ending, also led toWeaponsregistering a “Verified Hot” 87% on the Popcornmeter, formerly the RT audience score, andWeaponsalso managed to secure an “A-” CinemaScore.

Meanwhile, movie lovers also flocked to theaters to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite in Disney’sFreakier Friday, which ranked No. 2 at the box office over the weekend with an impressive $29 million en route to a global take of $45 million. The long-awaitedFreaky Friday(2003) sequel was also “Certified Fresh” by the critics, but its 73% Tomatometer hardly holds a candle to the responseWeaponsgarnered. However, the body-switching comedy did have the advantage of posting better grades with audiences, as evidenced byFreakier Friday’s “Verified Hot” 93% Popcornmeter rating and the film’s “A” CinemaScore.

‘Sketch’ Ekes Its Way Into the Weekend’s Top 10

While No. 1Weaponsand No. 2Freakier Fridaydominated the weekend, another new release struggled just to squeeze its way into the Top 10. Writer and director Seth Worley’s genre-mashing No. 10Sketch, which is dubbed a fantasy/horror/comedy, had trouble finding its target audience, and, as a result, only made $2.4 million. Meanwhile, focusing again on the weekend’s big winners,last week’s box office champion,The Fantastic Four: First Steps, finished at No. 3 over the weekend with $15.5 million.

The Bad Guys 2checked in at No. 4 with $10.4 million, whileThe Naked Gunrounded out the Top 5 with $8.4 million.Supermandropped out of the Top 5 for the first time since hitting theaters in July. However, the first big-screen entry in the DCU still managed to rank No. 6 with $7.8 million, andJames Gunn’s opus will reportedly soon be available on digital(Aug. 26), although Warner Bros. has not confirmed the film’s VOD release date at the time of this writing. It’s also worth noting thatSuperman($578.8 million) is inching ever closer to the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office.

However,Nobody 2is opening against lesser competition, including Chuck Russell’s (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Mask) horror filmWitchboardand the Sydney Sweeney-ledAmericana.
