Don’t get too amped up about that rumoredWatchmenTV show on HBO. Not long ago it was reported by Variety thatDamon Lindelof(The Leftovers) was working on a series for HBO based on Alan Moore’s classic DC Comics miniseries. Now, Lindelof has addressed his alleged involvement with theWatchmenTV series and, at least as it stands, he hasn’t even met with the network about the show yet.
As reported byCollider, Damon Lindelof recently addressed theWatchmenshow. Even though he shot down having met withHBOabout the project, he did heavily imply that this is something he is working on in some capacity, but there is nothing official to speak of at this time. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“All I can say at this time is, as of right now I haven’t had any meetings at HBO about Watchmen. I’ve been very vocal about my love for those 12 issues that eventually became agraphic novel, that they were completely and totally inspiring for all the storytelling that I did subsequently, and that I owe a debt to it. So is that piece of material something that’s really interesting to me? Yes, but I do feel like I have to weigh the balance of ‘Should it exist?’ before I decide to take it on, and I’m sort of in that process now. I hold the source material in such high regard it would literally be the worst feeling in the world to screw it up. So I take it very seriously, there’s a lot of responsibility. All I can say is I’m thinking about Watchmen a lot right now, nothing official.”
He seems to be pretty cagey about it, but the main takeaway here is that thisWatchmenTV series doesn’t seem to be quite as far along, at least not with Damon Lindelof, as we may have thought. HBO initially started developing the series withWatchmenmoviedirector Zack Snyderback in 2015, but that version of the series didn’t come to pass. Is HBO possibly approaching other creative types to try and execute their vision forWatchmenon the small screen? Maybe, but Lindelof seems pretty non-committal at this point.
Watchmenis regarded not only as one of the best comic book series ever written, but one of thebest literary works of the 21st century period. It was thought to be unfilmable for years and, despite mixed feelings on the movie, Zack Snyder did prove it could be done. With the amazing work HBO has done with shows likeGame of ThronesandWestworld, it seems likeWatchmencould really work as a miniseries. Maybe this will eventually get off the ground, but it seems a long way off as it stands. Or maybe someone other than Damon Lindelof can step in and get it going. We will be sure to keep you up to date as any other information on the project is made available.
