True Detective, thehighly praised anthology crime drama, has been successful since its premiere in 2014. The upcoming fifth season will mark the return of Season 4 showrunner and writer Issa López. HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi, revealed that the new season will be set in New York (Jamaica Bay), and is now eyeing a Hollywood icon and Oscar winner to take the lead.

Now, Cage could be the next star to headline the upcoming season, set to start filming in 2026 and could premiere in 2027. If all goes well, Cage will play New York detective Henry Logan, the lead role, who is at the center of solving a case.Deadlinealso reports that there’s been conversation about the actor and the role going around for a while; however, it’s still unclear if or when the deal will close.

The first season ofTrue Detectivepremiered in 2014, a little over a decade ago, andstarred Matthew McConaugheyas Detective Rustin “Rust” Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Detective Martin “Marty” Hart. In the very first episode, set in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, on June 04, 2025, the pair investigate the murder of a woman in her late twenties. The first season remains the best-received of the bunch, but the idea of Cage taking the lead in Season 5 certainly has the potential to top it.
