Nic Pizzolatto, the original showrunner and creator ofHBO’s excellent crime drama,True Detective, believes that there’s a future for Cohle and Hart, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s characters from Season 1. The detectives only appeared in the first season due to the show’s anthology format, but part of the show’s long-lasting acclaim has been because of them. Fans have always pleaded for their return, and now Pizzolatto says that he has an idea that might be realized in the future.

The TV producer and writer appeared on the podcastNothing Left Unsaidwith hosts Tim and Troy Green and went on a career retrospective. Also famous for his writing credits inThe Killing, Pizzolatto addressed his work as a writer building up to his biggest project to date,True Detective.

Different seasons of True Detective with characters in different colors

Although he has left the show, the writer is still proud as ever of the series, and recognizes that Season 1 is one of the best TV productions ever made. “It had always been pitched as an anthology,” Pizzolatto says when asked if he was pressured to think about continuing the character’s storylines from Season 1, mainly McConaughey’s Rust Cohle and Harrelson’s Marty Hart. He also says that after the great receptionthe first season had, it was always about getting the actors together and them saying, “Come on, let’s do another one.” Apparently, if this were to happen, Pizzolatto already has an idea in mind for reviving the iconic detectives:

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day.

“It’s character-based again, that’s all…But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

Nic Pizzolatto Addresses His Exit From ‘True Detective’ After Season 3

In the podcast, Pizzolatto also spoke about his decision to leave the show in 2019. After Season 3, the show would take a long break until 2022 when Issa López took over the franchise and releasedTrue Detective: Night Country. Despite Season 4’sreturn to the horror tonethat Season 1 was famous for, Pizzolatto was not involved at all. He believes his decision was justified because he felt he had to take some distance from the “darkness”:

“I was the one who walked away from my contract at the end of 2019. I believe if I had given them a good script for another season of True Detective, I believe they would have gone for it. But I myself was spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness. And dealing with such dark materials. And then I got full custody of my daughter back and that was a situation where I really needed to be a father… and I had to step away from a lot of work in 2020.”
