Last month, we reported that Universal Pictures had entered talks with bothTom CruiseandSofia Boutellato star in their long-awaitedUntitled Mummy Reboot. Today we have a new report fromVariety, which reveals that bothTom CruiseandSofia Boutellahave officially signed on, with Universal Pictures also setting a new release date of June 09, 2025, pushing it up three months from June 29, 2025. This upcoming adventure will now go up against Paramount’sWorld War Z 2and Lionsgate’sThe Divergent Series: Ascendant, while it would have only faced Lionsgate’sPower Rangersin its old June 10, 2025 date.

No plot details have been confirmed yet, but the movie is set in present day, marking the first full adventure in Universal’sshared monster universe. It was confirmed in 2014 thatDracula Untold’s end credit scene, whereLuke Evans' title character was seen in present day, serves as a prologue to the entire series, but it isn’t known if Dracula himself will show up in this movie. Another rumor surfaced in October 2014 that the movie will center onNavy SEALSin Iraq, but that was never confirmed.

Sofia Boutellawill play the title creature, marking the first time in Universal history that a female has portrayed the Mummy. Universal’s original 1932 classicThe Mummystarred Boris Karloff as the title character, withArnold Voslootaking over the role for the studio’s 1999 remakeThe Mummyand its 2001 sequelThe Mummy Returns.Jet Listepped in to portray The Mummy in 2008’sThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

It isn’t known exactly whoTom Cruiseis playing at this time, or how many other main characters still need to be cast.Tom Cruiseisn’t expected to produce this installment, but this report claims he will play an active role in the story’s development.Alex Kurtzman, who is overseeing the entire monster universe withChris Morgan, is directing from a screenplay byJon Spaihts.

While it isn’t known which movie will come after theUntitled Mummy Reboot, Universal is also developing films based on classic characters like Dracula,Van Helsing,The Bride of FrankensteinandThe Wolfman. All of these characters are said to interact with each other and spring up in different movies, before a movie that will bring them all together, which is being compared toMarvel’s The Avengers.
