Godzilla x Kong: The New EmpiredirectorAdam Wingardbelieves that his highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved 1980s cartoon,ThunderCats, “could be” his next project. Speaking withColliderduring a press tour for his new MonsterVerse movie, Wingard also revealed that his plan for theThunderCatsmovie is to “stay as true to the source material as possible.” See what Wingard had to say about the live-action adaptation below…

“Well, I think you have to have a little bit of both. You gotta take it seriously. In the cartoon, even though it was definitely for kids, the characters were in a fair amount of danger. I’m definitely still scarred from that one episode where Lion-O’s getting wrapped up in the mummy, the rope, and he’s in the temple. That really messed me up as a kid. But yeah, I think any good adaptation these days is you’ve got to stay as true to the source material as possible. That’s what people really want, and that’s sort of our goal. I mean, if you’re doing something that’s beyond being a kid’s cartoon, obviously you have to raise the stakes. So, yeah, it’s got a little bit of both of that.”

The Hollow Earth Will Inspire the Visuals in the Live-Action Thundercats Movie

In the past, Wingard has explained how his work on movies inthe MonsterVerse will influence his plansfor bringing theThunderCatsinto live-action. Wingard first joined the franchise with 2021’sGodzilla vs. Kong, and the director has since revealed how the introduction and visuals of the Hollow Earth provide the biggest clues for how hisThunderCatsmovie will look when it hits the silver screen.

“The ThunderCats thing is interesting, because I’d kind of written it off for so long. Because, like I said, as a kid, it just seemed like it was impossible. And so, it was only really actually during the pandemic - and I would say during the late phases of the Godzilla vs. Kong post - when I started getting shots in from the Hollow Earth scene. I started looking at it and, honestly, this is how it started. It was literally I was looking at shots of Hollow Earth and I thought, god, this is exactly what a ThunderCats movie should look like. And then I thought, wait a minute, I could make the ThunderCats movie!”
