With Marvel’sThor: Ragnarokarriving on Blu-ray and DVD today, it’s the perfect time to reflect on this superhero blockbuster in a satirical way, with the newHonest Trailerfor the thirdThormovie. Typically, Honest Trailers tear bad movies to shreds, but they can be just as entertaining by skewering the movies that are universally beloved, likeThor: Ragnarok, which was both a critical (92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and commercial ($314.2 million domestic, $853.8 million worldwide) success. If you still haven’t seenThor: Ragnarok, there will be SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk.
The Honest Trailer begins with narrator Jon Bailey (a.k.a.Epic Voice Guy) taking Marvel to task about its elaborate, and lengthy, new Marvel Studios logo that precedes each MCU movie. The narrator goes on to state thatThor: Ragnarokrepresents a bold new direction that Marvel undertook for theThorfilms: “not making them suck.” He does have a point, since both 2011’sThorand 2013’sThor: The Dark Worldare widely considered to be the worst films in the MCU. Part of making this movie “not suck” is trimming a lot of “dead weight,” such as not featuring Thor’s girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) or Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), killing off The Warriors Three (Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano and Zachary Levi), taking away his hammer Mjolnir, destroying his homeland Asgard and even cutting his hair.
The trailer also makes a rather hilarious point that, despite Thor having the ability to shoot lightning through his hands, he spends a significant chunk of the movie getting electrocuted. After Thor and Loki’s fatherOdin(Anthony Hopkins) “Luke Skywalker’s himself into the afterlife,” it isn’t the brothers who take over the crown, but their long-lost sister Hela, who is hilariously described as the “Goddess of Pointy Things.” The narrator also brings up a good point that perhaps Thor should have been the “adopted” child, since he bears such little resemblance to his father and siblings.
The narrator also pokes fun at the abundance of jokes that are peppered throughout the film, much more than previousThormovies, withwriter-director Taika Waititi"tagging" scenes that might normally be rather boring and filled with exposition, with jokes. While the narrator admits that the filmmaker may “overdo” it with the jokes at times, they’re still rather effective. He also points out how this will be the closest anyone will come to a truePlanet Hulkadaptation, carrying certain elements from that iconic comic book story over for this big screen adventure, while pointing out how little it takes Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to get over the fact that he’s been stuck as theHulkfor the past two years.
This trailer also mentions thatThor: Ragnarokhas the best bridge scene sinceDeadpool, the best “two-man laser fight scene” (where Thor and Loki team up together) sinceStarship Troopersand the best, “vehicle chase sequence where the hero leaps out of the vehicle to take the bad guys down by hand, since all the other ones.” The trailer then showcases clips fromAvengers: Age of Ultron,Guardians of the Galaxy,Captain America: The Winter Soldierand even last month’sBlack Panther.
