Marvelhas a long history of bringing in directors who might not appear to be traditional choices to take the helm of a superhero movie. That tradition was upheld earlier this month, when we reported that filmmakerTaika Waititi, best known forcomedymovies likeWhat We Do in the ShadowsandEagle Vs. Shark, is in talks to directThor: Ragnarok. According to a new report fromBirth.Movies.Death, the filmmaker was brought in to balance outChristopher Yost’s script, which is said to beMarvel’s darkest yet.
The report also essentially confirms a rumor that surfaced yesterday, which claimed thatMark Ruffalo’sHulkwill have a prominent role inThor: Ragnarok, alongsideChris Hemsworth(Thor),Tom Hiddleston(Loki) andJaimie Alexander(Lady Sif). Hulk will reportedly have a major role, and the filmmakers want to accentuate the humor between Hulk and Thor, who are said to be going on a “cosmic road trip.” Where exactly this road trip will take them remains to be seen, but it seems clear that Hulk will have a big role to play inThor: Ragnarok.
The story has been rumored to center on the Norse Apocalypse, but no specific plot details have been given. This new report claims that Hulk and Thor will encounter the Valkyries throughout their journey, and that this movie could introduce the Marvel heroine named Valkyrie, a.k.a. Brunnhilde, as well. Valkyrie was first introduced in the Avengers comics, and she was also connected to The Defenders andDoctor Strange. Valkyrie’s most notable enemy was The Enchantress, a character who may also be introduced on the big screen inThor: Ragnarok. The report isn’t sure if Valkyrie will be introduced as a stand alone hero, or if the Valkyries as a group will be shown as the beings who bring gods to Valhalla after they die.
With all of that being said,Marvelis hoping to cast some “great women” for roles inThor: Ragnarok. While it isn’t known ifTaika Waititihas officially signed on yet, it’s rumored that he may team up with another writer to add a comedic balance toChristopher Yost’s script. We reported in August that Disney was considering filmingThor: Ragnarokin Australia, following the studio’s great experience in the country while filmingPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. While we still don’t have any confirmed story details,Jaimie Alexanderteased in July that elements inCaptain America: Civil Warwill help set upThor: Ragnarok.
Naturally,Marvelhasn’t confirmed any details aboutThor: Ragnarok, including any news about Hulk joining Thor, or how dark the script may or may not be. Would you like to see Thor and Hulk going on a humorous, cosmic road trip inThor: Ragnarok? It isn’t known when production will begin yet, but hopefully we’ll hear more plot details very soon.
