Back in October, a new report surfaced that the script forThor: RagnarokwasMarvel’s darkest yet, with new directorTaika Waititi(What We Do in the Shadows) coming aboard to inject some humor into the movie. Just a few days later, it was confirmed thatMark Ruffalowill be back asHulk, who will go on what was described as a “cosmic road trip” with Thor (Chris Hemsworth). While no details have been confirmed yet,Mark Ruffaloconfirmed this “road trip” aspect in a new interview withEmpire. Here’s what the actor had to say, comparing this aspect of the story to the 1988 classic Midnight Run.
“There’s a little bit of Midnight Run, with(Charles) Grodinand(Robert) De Niro. I feel like that’s kind of where we’re heading with this relationship betweenThorand Banner. It is a universal road movie - that’s where we’re heading. It’s not where you’d think it will be, so it’s not your classic road movie but it has that structure, I think.”
Both Thor and Hulk are two of the fewMarvel Cinematic Universecharacters who will not appear in this year’sCaptain America: Civil War. We last saw Hulk at the end of last summer’sAvengers: Age of Ultron, where he stole a QuinJet and took off for parts unknown, because he felt he was too dangerous due to all of the damage he caused.Mark Ruffaloteased last month thatBruce Bannerwill be “on the run,” and that this new movie will explore Hulk and Thor’s relationship. During this new interview, he added he hasn’t read a script yet, but they’re discussing a more comedic tone to the movie.
“I love Chris [Hemsworth], and it’s not an accident that we’ve been put together because we have a good time together and we goof off. The fact that we’re moving towards the smart-comedic bent plays into our relationship.”
