Fans will get to explore a different part of theStar Wars universewhenRogue One: A Star Wars Storyhits theaters on December 16. This adventure will introduce fans to a new group of Rebel heroes, who go on a dangerous mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star. DirectorGareth Edwardsrevealed in an interview that one of these characters steals every seen they’re in, and it may not be who you expect.
This character is in fact one of the few non-human characters inRogue One, the new droidK-2SO, who is voiced and performed through motion capture byAlan Tudyk.Disney Rewardscaught up withGareth Edwards, who spoke about the “silly-looking outfit” he had to wear during production, while revealing that K-2SO provides a lot of humor for the film. Here’s what he had to say about the former Imperial droid.
“Alanhad to wear this rather silly-looking outfit with dots on it while we were filming, and he always felt like the uncool guy on the set surrounded by actors in super cool costumes. I would tell him, ‘Alan, don’t worry. You’re going to steal every scene you’re in.’ And I was right. Once we put the robot overlay in, he was fantastic. He brings a lot of humor to the film.”
Rogue Oneis set betweenRevenge of the SithandA New Hope, but it’s already clear this will be a much differentStar Warsmovie.Kathleen Kennedyhas previously confirmed that the movie won’t feature an opening crawl, like all seven of the previousStar Warsmovies before it.Gareth Edwardsteases that there will be many similarities between this movie and the rest of the franchise, but the story will focus on new characters.
“We wrote down everything that makes a story aStar Wars tale. We all have different opinions, of course, but some of the absolutes are the epic backdrop, the story of a family relationship that has been splintered and torn apart, and the fundamental pull between good and evil. But the new characters are at the heart of the film. We wanted to explore how everyday people have been caught up in the conflict with the Empire. Jyn Erso, is pulled into the struggle by something that has happened to her in the past. She doesn’t start off wanting to be a soldier, but she’d been dealt a bad hand and chooses to do something about it.”
