We all know thatBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceis getting anR-Ratedcut this summer. But there is one scene that might be too dark for even that more graphically violent release, which clocks in at over 3 hours. If you’ve ever wondered whySupermandoesn’t often use his X-ray vision or his super hearing in the last twoZack Snyderdirected adventures revolving around TheMan of Steel, this deleted scene explains it all too well.
Speaking withIGN, the filmmaker opened up about the one scene that was just too depressing to include in his movie, which, though very dour, is still supposed to be fun on some level. It is a comic book movie after all. He explains.
“We had a scene that we cut from the movie where [Superman] tries to look for [his mom] when he finds out thatLexhas got her. It was a slightly dark scene that we cut out because it sort of represented this dark side. Because when he was looking for his mom he heard all the cries of all the potential crimes going on in the city, you know when you look.”
So, the corruption of the city was too much for Superman, and audiences, too bare. Even though he is a super powered extraterrestrial, he can’t be everywhere at once. Superman isn’t typically an angry character, but he does become enraged when Lex kidnaps his mother, Martha, threatening her life. Why didn’t Kal-El sense this was happening? The deleted scene described above helps to fill in this plot hole that had some scratching their heads.
Previous to revealing that this deleted scene existed,Zack Snyderhad explained to select members of the press that Superman couldn’t hear his mother’s screams because the distance from Smallville to Metropolis was too great for his Kryptonian enhanced hearing. Add the fact that there were a lot of mixed signals and clutter that messed with his ears. That idea is fleshed out in this missing scene.Zack Snyderwent onto talk about how Superman can’t always intervene in every bad situation around the world.
“I kind of like the idea that he’s taught himself not to look because if he looks it’s just never-ending, right? You have to know when, as Superman, when to intervene and when not to. Or not when not to, you can’t be everywhere at once, literally you can’t be everywhere at once, so he has to be really selective in a weird way about where he chooses to interfere.”
The director doesn’t go onto say whether or not this deleted scene will resurface in the R-Rated cut coming later this year. The theatrical cut is already too long at two hours and thirty one minutes, so we can’t blame the guy for cutting off some of the fat, even if it did open a slightly irritating plot hole for some fans.
