Disney CEOBob Igerconfirmed today that the studio is developing a thirdStar Wars spin-off, with a screenwriter already in place. The CEO wouldn’t reveal the identity of the writer involved in the project, or what this spin-off will focus on, but there have long been rumors that the movie will center on the iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett. That still hasn’t been confirmed, but with a writer on board, we could hear more about this project soon.
The Hollywood Reportercaught up withBob Igerduring a conference in New York, with the CEO also revealing that he has heard a pitch from the director ofStar Wars: Episode IX. While that director is not identified in the report,Colin Trevorrowhas long been attached to write and direct the final installment of this new trilogy, so perhaps this means that the the script is finished. The filmmaker recently teased that he wants to direct a scene fromStar Wars 9in outer space with IMAX cameras.
Bob Igeralso commented on the firstStar Warsspin-off,Rogue One, calling it an “experiment, of sorts,” since it is the firstStar Warsmovie that won’t be directly tied to the Luke Skywalker saga. The story is set between the events ofStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the SithandStar Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Here’s whatBob Igerhad to say in a brief statement aboutRogue One.
“This is a moment in time, and we’ve loved what we’ve seen.”
As for the third mysteriousStar Warsspin-off, we first heard about that project in May 2014, when it was rumored that the first stand alone movie would focus on Boba Fett, followed by theHan Solo spin-offin 2018 and a 2020 movie centering on Red 5, referring to Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing fighter code name in the original trilogy. Another rumor surfaced last year thatMichael B. Jordanwas being considered to play Boba Fett, but nothing about this project has been confirmed quite yet.
As for this mystery writer, a previous report revealed thatSimon Kinberg, who producesStar Wars Rebels, was slated to write the third spin-off, but we don’t know if that is still the case.Josh Trankwas at one point attached to direct this spin-off, but there is no filmmaker in place quite yet. A report from November revealed that Disney plans on releasing a newStar Wars movieevery year, indefinitely, with the studio most likely sticking with their current formula of releasing spin-offs in between the main flagship films. HopefullyBob Igerand Disney release more details soon about the thirdStar Wars Spin-Off.
