The latest iteration ofThe Twilight Zone (2019)has come to an end. Next month, CBS All Access will be officially rebranded as the new streaming service Paramount+, and tons of new movies and TV shows have just been announced for the streamer. That won’t include another season of Jordan Peele’s reboot of the iconic horror anthology series, asThe Twilight Zonehas reportedly been canceled after a two-season run on CBS All Access.
“Jordan Peele, Simon Kinberg and the entire production team truly reimaginedThe Twilight Zonefor the modern age,” Paramount+ head of programming Julie McNamara toldThe Hollywood Reporter. “They upheld the classic series' legacy ofsocially conscious storytellingand pushed today’s viewers to explore all new dimensions of thought-provoking and topical themes that we hope will resonate with audiences for years to come.”
Reportedly, the decision to endThe Twilight Zonecomes from executive producers Peele and Simon Kinberg, as CBS All Access/Paramount+ were keen on keeping the series going. It’s possible they simply want to focus on other projects at this time. As Peele also served as the host and narrator, he was rather hands-on with the series. He is now currently working on this third feature as a director withGet Outstar Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer reportedly attached to star.
Created and hosted by Rod Serling,The Twilight Zoneoriginally aired between 1959 and 1964. Each episode presents a standalone story that often comes with a surprise ending and some kind of moral lesson that Serling explains to the viewers. The series has been rebooted multiple times over the years, including a three-season revival in the 1980s with narrator Charles Aidman and another single-season reboot in 2002 with Forest Whitaker hosting. A feature film adaptation,The Twilight Zone: The Movie, was released in 1983.
Developed by Peele, Kinberg, and Marco Ramirez, the newest take onThe Twilight Zonepremiered on CBS All Access in 2019. Partway through the first season, it was renewed for season 2, which premiered on the streamer last summer. With Peele stepping in as the narrator in place of Serling, the show carried on the traditional anthology horror format with different stories. Several notable guest stars were also brought in to appear in different episodes, including Zazie Beetz, Chris Meloni, Steven Yeun, Kumail Nanjiani, Jurnee Smollett, Topher Grace, and George Takei.
This might be the end ofJordan Peele’s version of The Twilight Zone, but plenty of other shows will live on thanks to Paramount+. Series reboots of several major shows from the past likeFrasier,Criminal Minds,iCarly,Reno 911,Inside Amy Schumer, andRugratsare heading to the streamer, and other shows likeBeavis and Butt-headandWorkaholicsare getting their own movie adaptations for the streaming service as well. It’s a bummer to seeThe Twilight Zoneending its latest run, but there will still be certainly plenty to watch on Paramount+.
