Spice Girls Animated Movieis currently in development at Paramount. The studio made the announcement today and confirmed the movie will feature all five original members. The group is currently on tour, though Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) decided not to participate. She supports her fellow bandmates and wished them luck on their tour, which has been selling out stadiums across Europe. However, it looks like Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Beckham are getting ready to reunite for the big screen.
Paramount Animation president Mireille Soria revealed some information aboutthe studio’s upcoming animation slateand talked aboutThe Spice Girlsanimated movie. The five original members had an idea that Paramount has been developing. ‘They are very involved," says Soria. In addition to reuniting all five women, the movie will feature old classics and boast some new songs from the group, which should make long-time fans very excited. The new music will mark the first time since 2007 that all five were involved in a recording session. “Song For Her” came out in 2016, but it did not include Melanie Chisolm or Victoria Beckham.
Simon Fuller is producingThe Spice Girlsanimated movie with Karen McCullah and Kiwi Smith writing the screenplay. No director has been announced at this time and the same can be said about a possible release date. With that being said, a 2021 release seems likely if everything goes as planned. The group wraps up their2019 Spice Girls touron June 15th at Webley Stadium un England, which will give them time to start working on the movie.
The last time the original fiveSpice Girlswere together on the big screen was 1997’s Spice World, which was massive. 1997 was the year of the group and they could basically do no wrong. The movie made over $151 million worldwide with an initial budget of $25 million and there have been talks of a sequel pretty much ever since. The group has been hinting at the possibility of a full reunion over the past two years, so this animated project may have been the big one, although many were hoping for a full global reunion tour with all five members.
Paramount’s animated slate for 2020 features the long-awaitedSpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge(May 2020) andRumble(July 2020), which is based on author Rob Harrell’s graphic novel Monster on a Hill. So, a 2021 release forThe Spice Girlsanimated movie will probably be released soon after the aforementioned projects. TheSpongeBob Movieis set to be a tribute to late creator Stephen Hillenburg, who sadly passed away last November.
