A Beagle’s Run on Apple
There’s little to say what hasn’t already been said about the importance ofPeanuts. The once small comic strip grew over time to become a cultural icon, with Good ol’ Charlie Brown helping kids and grown-ups alike through all the tough times. The comics launched in 1950 and ran consistently until 2000, with Schultz passing away shortly after the final strip was published. With the popularity of the comics, the characters were also well known through the long-running series of television specials starting withA Charlie Brown Christmas. The specials would run consistently on television for over 50 years, then something happened in 2020 that would stir up controversy among fans.
In 2020, AppleTV+ announced thatthey had purchased the streaming rights to the specials. This caused an uproar of negativity from fans of all ages, who had tuned in to see the characters as a yearly tradition. Apple assured the fans that they would open the specials to free streaming for a few days, but fans responded back stating that they didn’t want to install yet another streaming service for viewing. Apple eventually bowed and teamed up with PBS to air the beloved holiday specials for ad-free broadcasting ofA Charlie Brown ThanksgivingandA Charlie Brown Christmas. This decision seemed to calm the flames.
SincePeanutsmoved to Apple, the company seems to be picking its decisions wisely with these characters. Along with the two Snoopy shows,Apple TV+ also produced an all-new special, the first holiday special since 2003’sI Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown! For Auld Lang Synewas a New Years' Eve, Lucy-centric story!
