The Lost Citydirecting duo Aaron and Adam Nee will reportedly helm a newLEGOmovie, with the project expected to bring the bricks and the live action world together. According to a report byVariety, this new LEGO movie will be “a new hybrid live-action animation film around theLegofranchise,” with the filmmakers having signed a pact with Universal and The Lego Group long before the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes began.

“This is especially true of the Nee brothers, who insiders said have a deal at Universal to develop a new hybrid live-action animation film around theLegofranchise (that pact was signed long before the strike),” the report reads. “Universal signed a five-year partnership with the Lego Group in 2020 to produce new films and series based on the toys.”

Will Ferrell in The Lego Movie

Released in 2014, the firstThe Lego Movieis a 3D-animated movie that follows an ordinary LEGO construction worker who finds himself prophesied as “the special” and is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from transforming the LEGO universe into an eternal stasis. Written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, against all odds,The Lego Moviewas met with critical acclaim and has since spawned a sequeland several spinoffs, includingThe Lego Batman Movie.

While details of how the next installment in theLegofranchise will be a live-action/animated hybrid,The Lego Moviedoes take a somewhat meta-approach to the story, introducing a live-action world inhabited by the likes of Will Ferrell as a real-life businessman and his family. Could The Lego Movie 3 helmed by the Nee brothers see the LEGO and the human worlds collide? We will have to wait and see.

The Lego Movie 3 Will Reinvent the Franchise

This is not the first we have heard toThe Lego Movie 3, and in particular that the sequel will be a major shake-up for the franchise. The Nee brothers were launched into the spotlight last year following the release of their well-received adventure comedy,The Lost City. The filmmakers have been on board to helm a live-action adaptation ofMasters of the Universefor Netflix since 2018. However, it was recently confirmed that, despite the streaming service spending around $30 million on development, the projecthas now been canceleddue to budget concerns with Mattel likely to shop around for another studio to craft their live-action take on the adventures of He-Man and his friends.
