The Goonies 2is one of those sequels that just won’t die. No matter how far away we get from it actually happening. WhenPixelswas opening this summer, director of that filmChris Columbus, who wrote the originalGoonies, claimed the movie was still happening. Only very slowly. He claimed it was in ‘heavy development’. Well, ifThe Goonies 2does happen, it won’t be a true reunion for the cast, as an original, very integralGooniesays he’s not showing up. And directorRichard Donner, who threwThe Goonies 2rumor machine into hyper drive over a year ago, claiming that the movie was happening, isn’t so sure any more. If it does happen, that moment is a long ways off.
Jeff Cohenplayed the GoonieChunk, best friend to Sloth and the originator of the iconicTruffle Shuffle. He never acted again afterGoonies, instead going into entertainment law. He is recognized as one of Hollywood’s leading ‘Showbiz Strategists’ and recently published the book, The Dealmaker’s Ten Commandments. He doesn’t really have time for acting, and while he says it might be fun to do again, he’s not really into it. He tellsYahoo!he’s going to stick with his current means of employment.
“Look, being an actor is great, I miss being an actor. I think anyone who’s been an actor, you kind of miss it even if you were just in school plays. You miss it because it was a fun experience. But I think I’m going to stick with the entertainment-law thing. That seems to be working out [laughs].”
This is truly sad news, butJeff Cohendoesn’t really fit the Chunk profile anymore, having lost all the baby fat to become a fit, healthy adult. Though he threw massive fuel on the fire when he toldTMZway back in April 2014 thatThe Goonies 2was happening with all of the original cast returning,Richard Donnerdoesn’t seem so sure now. Yes, the movie is in active development at Warner Bros. But there’s only a 50/50 change it will ever make it to the screen. When asked if we’re ever going to seeThe Goonies 2in this lifetime, the always cheerful filmmaker kept smiling when he gave his answer, though it wasn’t cheery news.
“Maybe. Again, everything takes a long time to get it right. If you do things fast and quick and easy, that’s a disservice. But if there were going to be another movie it would take us a long time to get it right, because we have a lot of history that we’re involved with and a lot of integrity that we have to keep to what once was, and lives a life of its own without destroying it. Maybe the powers that be are working on something.”
“Never say Die!” That’s The Goonies motto. While we might not seeThe Goonies 2anytime in the near future,Richard Donnersays something else is in the pipeline for The Goonies. And from the sounds of it, this project might be cooler than a sequel. We’ve heard before that The Goonies is coming to the stage. About that, he has this new information to share.
“We’re going to do an off-Broadway, do you know what immersion theatre is? Where there’s no seats, the venue is you go into a warehouse and there’s something happening in that warehouse and that’s the play you’ve come to see, only you become part of it and you travel through with actors. It’s very popular now. We’re doing one on The Goonies. It will take another year or so but it’s going to be wonderful.”
