Is ‘Halloween H20’ the Best Sequel in the Michael Myers Franchise?

Grossing $75 million against a $17 million budget,Halloween H20became one of the highest-grossing entries in theHalloweenfranchise. The critical reception was mixed, and though it sits at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes (with 50% on the audience score), it is still one of the highest-rated of the series. In retrospect,Halloween H20could easily be the best sequel among all the entries (we’re not considering the 2018 movie part of Laurie’s original timeline, but instead as a full reboot).

The kills are good, the performances are decent, and it fits the logic of Michael Myers’s initial journey. The film is well-written, and you can notice Kevin Williamson’s (heavy, but uncredited) contribution to the film, right as he became a horror icon after writing major films likeScream,Scream 2,The Faculty, andI Know What You Did Last Summer.

Despite issues before and during production (John Carpenter was supposed to direct it, but producers did not agree with his fee, and the script suffered changes),Halloween H20resulted in a pretty solid ’90s horror movie. It’s effective enough to be among the best in the franchise, and has one of the best conclusions of theHalloweenuniverse, even if the ending butchered whenHalloween: Resurrectionfollowed.
