Sydney Sweeneyis trading her short-lived superhero suit for boxing gloves inan upcoming untitled biopic about one of the most legendary female boxers in sports history. Although theEuphoriaactress is no stranger to transforming herself for an acting role, this will be perhapsher most unrecognizable character yet. Sweeney puts on some muscle and sports a new hairstyle in hopes of capturing the essence of Christy Martin, the woman well-known for putting women’s boxing on the global map.
Sweeney posted onInstagram, officially revealing her transformation as the legendary boxer Christy Martinafter paparazzi nabbed candid photos from the film currently in production. The actress is noticeably buff, putting on some extra weight and muscle. She is also rocking a mullet, which is very suitable for the ’80s and early ’90s, presumably when the biopic takes place. Ever since the project was announced, Sweeney has been adamant about her commitment to portraying Martin as accurately as possible. Based on her Instagram caption, her physical transformation took months to complete.

“well the cats out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes so here’s a little bts from my film im working on right now. over the past few months, i’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. more to come soon :)”
Sweeney is also involved behind the scenes, producing the Christy Martin biopic through her company Fifty-Fifty Films, along with Anonymous Content, Black Bear, and Votiv and Yoki Inc. The movie star has been making a point to beheavily involved in her projects as of late, using her production studio as a mean to give authors the chance to have their voices her on the big screen. In an interview withTeen Voguetwo years ago, Sweeney discussed why she started the company.
“Being able to make a dream of theirs that they didn’t think was possible for years and years happen, is amazing — to never put a limit to what their capabilities are because they’re female, or their age, or their background. I’m a big advocate for making sure everybody’s voice is heard.”
What Is the Christy Martin Boxing Biopic About?
For those unfamiliar, Christy Martin was a professional boxer who was active from 1989-2012. Her fight vs. Irish fighter Deirdre Gogarty in 1996 is well-known for being the match that made women’s boxing as relevant as it is in sports today. The film will likely cover that historical moment, but there is another major event in Martin’s life that made national headlines. In 2010, the iconic female boxer survived a murder attempt by her abusive husband, James Martin, who stabbed and shot her in their own home. He later spent 25 years in prison after being convicted of attempted second-degree murder. Their relationship will probably be a central point in the upcoming biopic.
