CBS announced today an order for seven more episodes ofSupergirl, providing a full season of 20 episodes for the freshman drama that launched on Oct. 26.CBShas now given additional episode orders to all four of its new fall series -Supergirl,Life in Pieces,LimitlessandCode Black.Supergirlcurrently averages 11.24 million viewers, 2.8/08 in adults 18-49 and 3.5/09 in adults 25-54. The series has improved the year-ago time period by +46% in viewers, +40% in adults 18-49 and +25% in adults 25-54.
Supergirlis an action-adventure drama based on theDC ComicscharacterKara Zor-El(Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents' help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret.
Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies asSupergirlto fight crime.
In related news,Bleeding Coolreported last week that CBS is planning a crossover withSupergirland The CW’sThe Flash. The report claimed that thiscrossovermay be contingent on CBS issuing a full-season order forSupergirl, which has now happened. While the crossover hasn’t been confirmed by CBS or The CW, this report claims that it will happen sometime during the May sweeps period.
The rumored crossover may be adapted from a story line in the comics regarding New Krypton, which involves over 100,000 Kryptonians coming to Earth. In the comics, these Kryptonians came to Earth after being freed from the Bottle City of Kandor, by the villainous Brainiac, while a new planet is being built for them. Kara Zor-El will reportedly meetThe Flashand his S.T.A.R. Labs team during the event, but no other story details were given. It’s worth noting that there have been rumors of a crossover betweenSupergirland eitherArroworThe Flashbefore. The CW is owned by both CBS and Warner Bros., and all three shows are produced byGreg Berlanti, but CBS has previously shot down any rumors of a crossover. Is it possible that CBS may have changed its mind about a crossover, but we’ll have to wait and see.
