Last week, we reported thatGary Whittahas completed his first draft of theUntitled Gareth Edwards Directed Star Wars Spin-Offscreenplay, and has now parted ways with the project, moving on to work onMark Millar’sStarlight. That report reveals LucasFilm will likely bring on a new writer, and today,/Filmreports thatSimon Kinbergis taking over writing duties on the project. LucasFilm andSimon Kinberg’s reps will not comment on the story, but the site is confident this information is correct.
If the news does prove to be true, it would make sense sinceSimon Kinbergis already deeply involved in theStar Warsuniverse, serving as a consultant on this year’s highly-anticipatedStar Wars: The Force Awakensand as a writer and producer on the new TV seriesStar Wars Rebels. The writer-producer wasalso confirmed to writeone of the other spinoff movies back in February 2013, which was rumored to be directorJosh Trank’sUntitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Offarriving in 2018. But that was never confirmed. It still isn’t known if theUntitled Gareth Edwards Directed Star Wars Spin-Offis a “wholly new venture,” or just a rewrite of one of the two previously-announced projects.

TheUntitled Gareth Edwards Directed Star Wars Spin-Offreportedly centers on a group of space pirates and a young Han Solo, or it may deal with a group of spies trying to steal plans for the original Death Star, right before the events seen inStar Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Those details have yet to be confirmed, but production is scheduled to begin later this year at Pinewood Studios in London, shortly after the new James Bond movieSpectrewraps production.
