Since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga inAvengers: Endgame, it’s been unclear what a new team of Avengers might look like moving forward. There hasn’t been a full team-up project since then, and it may be a few more years before afifthAvengersfilmhits theaters. However, Disney’s newest cruise ship is giving audiences a glimpse at who may be part of the next iteration of The Avengers.
TheDisney Wishcruise contains an attraction called the Worlds of Marvel, which includes an interactive presentation calledAvengers: Quantum Encounter. It’s basically dinner and a show, as passengers are shown an interactive short film while enjoying their food.Ant-Manand the Wasp are giving a presentation of Avengers tech when Ultron and a swarm of robots crash the party. An Avengers team of Ant-Man, Wasp, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Ms. Marvel have to assemble to protect the ship from imminent danger.
The most impressive part ofQuantum Encounteris that each of the main actors playing those roles reprises their characters for the cruise. Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Brie Larson, and Iman Vellani all come together on-screen for the first time, but that wasn’t always the intended lineup. In an interview withThe Direct, Worlds of Marvel Creative Director Danny Handke revealed Spider-Man was originally part of the Disney Wish experience:
“We had a bunch of different characters picked that just changed over time. Ms. Marvel was a very late add. There was one version where it was Spider-Man for the longest time as the young character who’s super excited to be here and has never been on a cruise ship before. And when I saw the first footage of Ms. Marvel and Iman [Vellani], and she’s a huge Avengers fan and Captain Marvel fan, it made perfect sense and to have her kind of tag along with Captain America and see that dynamic of him being serious and being a leader and her having fun just to be there. So it just kind of worked itself out having that casting.”

DidQuantum EncounterReveal the Next Avengers Lineup?
WhileQuantum Encounterisn’t exactly MCU canon, it’s still an exciting look at who could be part of the All-New, All-Different Avengers in the future. Having Sam serve as team leader due to being the new Captain America is an obvious choice, but Captain Marvel being a possible co-lead would create an interesting dynamic that hasn’t really been seen before. Even though Carol Danvers has mostly been concerned with galactic problems since her 2019 MCU debut, assuming a primary role with The Avengers would be a significant next step for the character, hopefully keeping her on Earth more often.
Ant-Man and the Wasp would also be excellent choices for The Avengers, but that all depends on where they end up after February’sAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Even though the character is brand-new to the MCU, Ms. Marvel as an Avenger creates a fun opportunity to see how a mega-fan reacts to actually being on the superhero team she idolizes. WhileQuantum Encounteroffered a bit of that dynamic with Kamala’s interactions with Sam, there’s much more to be explored in the actual world of the MCU.
Kevin Feige has said plans forAvengers 5have begun, but the film isn’t going to be coming together for the foreseeable future. The earliest a fifthAvengerscould premiere is 2024, which would only happen if production were to begin next year. It doesn’t seem like that’s going to be the case, unless Feige is waiting to drop a bombshell at either San Diego Comic-Con this month or D23 in September. For now,Quantum Encounterwill have to serve as an appetizer before the main course ofAvengers 5arrives somewhere down the line.
