There are two big questions facing theMarvel Cinematic Universeat this moment in time: Who will playSpider-Man? And…Will he be white? We may get those answers next week asRobert Downey Jr.teased an impending announcement from Marvel that promises to be epic in nature. While we wait for next Thursday to roll around, we do have some interesting comments from two actors currently rumored to be up for the role. The first isThe Hunger GamesstarJosh Hutcherson, who was actually eyed to play the character way back in 2011, beforeAndrew Garfieldgot cast as Peter Parker inThe Amazing Spider-Man. The second isDonald Glover, whom fans rallied around as he campaigned for the role of Peter Parker inThe Amazing Spider-Man, too.
Josh Hutchersondoesn’t claim to be up for the role of Peter Parker in the newSpider-Man. He does, however, say that he would love to take on the part. Speaking withYahoo, he says all Marvel has to do is ask:
“Yeah, of course I’d think about doing it: It’sSpider-Man, that’d be really cool. There’s not been any conversations about that, but who knows what would happen?”
When it comes toDonald Glovertaking on the role, the actor spins a more mysterious web of intrigue, hinting that he may be in talks despite earlier claiming that he was done campaigning for the role. Even though he wasn’t cast the first time the idea of a reboot came around five years ago, Marvel eventually created the character Mile Morales based somewhat on theCommunitystar, who has parlayed his talents into a career as a stand-up comedian and a hip hop artist. The actor once again took on theSpider-Manquestion while appearing onThe Today Show. When asked if he’s the new Peter Parker, he states:
“Am I? I can’t say I’m the next Spider-Man. I can’t [not say] that either. I mean, it’s not out yet. There’s been talkings about it. I’d be honored to play it, but it’s really not up to me. I just want Spider-Man to be good. I think Spider-Man’s one of my favorite characters. I personally think I would be amazing. Like the amazing Spider-Man.”
That doesn’t sound like he’s quite done campaigning to be the next Spider-Man, does it. It’s clear that he wants to keep his horse in this race. Though, its been reported that Sony and Marvel are looking for a teenager to play Peter Parker or Miles Morales. At 31 years-old,Donald Glovermay simply be too old.Josh Hutchersonon the other hand is 22 years-old, so he may be better suited, though fans are used to seeing him post High School, which is where the new Spider-Man trilogy is said to take place. Other actors rumored for the role includeLogan LermanandDylan O’Brien, who are both a year older thanJosh Hutchersonat 23. And it should be noted thatDonald Gloverhas somewhat accomplished his role of playing Spider-Man, as he voices Miles Morlaes on the animatedUltimate Spider-Manseries.
