Way back in 2010, when Sony Pictures was rebooting theirSpider-Manfranchise, a grassroots fan campaign sprung up forCommunitystarDonald Gloverto play the Miles Morales version of the web slinger, which the actor himself embraced. Despite a strong campaign, the studio eventually went withAndrew Garfield, who starred inThe Amazing Spider-ManandThe Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now, of course, Sony is rebooting the character once more, and, while promoting his new thrillerThe Lazarus Effect, in theaters February 27,Donald Gloverwas asked if he planned on campaigning for the role once again. Unfortunately forDonald Gloverfans, the actor said he would still be honored to play Spider-Man, but it isn’t something he will actively pursue.
“Of course, I would always be honored to playSpider-Man. It’sSpider-Man. But I just want theSpider-Manmovie to be dope, that’s all I want. I’m leaving it to them. Campaigning’s part of life, but for me, I’ve got a lot of stuff that I’m really excited about, and dropping it all. Of course it’d be an honor. But it’s fine, if it comes, if not.”
The actor will be voicing Miles Morales, who, in the comic books eventually took over the Spider-Man mantle, in the animated TV seriesUltimate Spider-Man. When asked if that could be a “stepping stone” to playing the character in a live-action movie, the actor had this to say.
“It was definitely fun doing it, but I’m playing a kid. The guy who is actually doing the actual Spider-Man (in the show) is younger than me, so it’s a different kind of feel. I couldn’t do that in the movie, definitely, but it’s fun to seeSpider-Manlike that.”
When asked, if he were to play Spider-Man, how he would make the role different, the actor had this to say.
“The thing I liked about Spider-Man the most is he felt misunderstood. That’s what always drew me toSpider-Man, that I always dealt with.”
