Last week, it was reported thatTom Holland’s new take onSpider-Manwould be introduced inCaptain America: Civil Warwearing the traditional red and blue uniform that he’s known for. Now, in a new interview with co-directorAnthony Russo, it has been revealed that the costume will arrive on screen with a ‘little twist’. Though, what that twist may be is unknown at this current moment in time.
The co-director also commented on the chances of seeing the IronSpider suitinCaptain America: Civil War, which appeared in the comic books upon which this story is based. Speaking withSuper Interessante, the filmmaker seems very enthusiastic about what is being planned forTom Holland, but apparently some of what we’ll see on screen is currently being worked on as a CGI creation.
There has long been the notion thatTom Hollandwill wear two different costumes inCivil War. Some speculate that we’ll seePeter Parkerin a homemade outfit as well as the Iron Spider armor. We’ll definitely see him in a costume that looks like what we’ve seen on screen before. But no one involved with the movie is being entirely forthcoming on the aspects of unleashing Iron Spider. Asked directly about its inclusion,Anthony Russohad this to say.
“Well, we did a lot of research and experimented with the looks of each character. We went through the same process with Spider-Man. We knew it was going to be someone young and it was very important to us because we wanted to give this essence to the character, because he is someone unique to the Marvel Universe. Tom Holland is an amazing Spider-Man, people will love him. It was a very experimental process, placing him with the other actors, especially with Downey Jr., we had to learn as we worked. And we’re very happy with the final result. We’re still working on a few things, like the costume. He’s not ready yet because so much will be produced with special effects.”
So much has been made aboutTom Holland’s acrobatic skills, that it may come as a surprise that when he’s in costume, he will be partially, even sometimes fully CGI. But that has been the case with every superhero in the MCU. When asked if the movie will show the Red and Gold costume as opposed to the Red and Blue, the Russo brother had this to say.
“The film will show a mix of what everyone is waiting for with a little twist. So yeah, that’s all I can say.”
There have been two different big screen Spider-Men so far, with both getting costumes unique to each other. And there have sometimes been multiple costumes in one movie. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 even introduced the black Spider-Man costume that first appeared in the comics way back in the 80s. But we doubt we’ll get to see that version any time soon. When it comes to the costumes in the previous movies, there have never been any real complaints from the fans. Sam Raimi’s iteration of the Peter Parker character gave the wall-crawler organic web-shooters, which deviated from his true origins. The Andrew Garfield version reverted back to the original web-shooters, which he made in his bedroom. InCaptain America: Civil War, it is believed that Tony Stark outfits Peter Parker with web-shooters created by Stark Industries.
When the cast forCaptain America: Civil Warwas announced, many were surprised to see the return of William Hurt as General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross. He first made an appearance in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Many fans believe we could see him transition into his Red Hulk persona from the comic books. ButAnthony Russois trying to wane those expectations. About Red Hulk emerging as a threat, he had this to say.
“We tried to rescue what had been done in the movies and move forward from there. We like the idea that this character had already appeared in the movies and it seemed like the perfect opportunity for him to make his return. So, the choice had more to do with the relationship of the character to this movie more so than to the comics. At least, for this movie.”
So it’s possible that RedHulkmay show up further down the road. But we’re not going to see him inCaptain America: Civil War.
