While the output ofStar Warsseries and specials has been consistent on the Disney+ streaming platform, Lucasfilm has struggled with getting its feature-length theatrical projects off the ground. Whether it is Rian Johnson’s long-lostStar Warstrilogy, the Kevin Feige-produced project that was supposedly in development, or Patty Jenkins’Rogue Squadronmovie that was shelved, it’s been a difficult battle to get aStar Warsfilm made. One of the more recent films that’s been reported on is Shawn Levy’s untitledStar Warsfeature that stars Ryan Gosling, which now has a new update that might have given fans insight into how far along it actually is.

In an interview with ScreenRant, screenwriter Jonathan Tropper talked about his work with Levy, and how his long-time working relationship with the director excites him for theStar Warsfilm, which Tropper is penning. The writer initially tried to keep quiet about the movie, saying, “I’m really not going to be able to talk about this. So yeah, you know, we’re still working on it. Yeah, it’s our fourth project together. It’s the first one sinceThe Adam Project.” Interestingly, he would also comment, “I hope it’s on the way sooner than you think.”

‘Andor’ will return to Disney+ with one of the most unique formats of any Star Wars show, but that was not always the plan.

Tropper and Levy previously worked together onThis is Where I Leave You, a 2014 film directed by Levy and written by Tropper, andKodachrome, which Tropper wrote and executive produced. Their last collaboration was the Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo-ledThe Adam Project, with this currently untitledStar Warsfilm being their reunion following Levy’s work onDeadpool & Wolverine.

Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Has a Better Chance Than Most To Go Into Production

Multiple factors are working in Shawn Levy’s favor that make it feel like his film has a better chance than previousStar Warsprojects to go into production. One significant aspect is that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, which was first revealed in early 2025. Gosling is a major star, and his leading the film would be one reason for it to take off. Another reason would be Levy’s incredible success withDeadpool & Wolverine. The film became the second-highest-grossing film of 2024, bringing in over 1.3 billion dollars, and is also the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Following the report on Gosling’sStar Warsdebut, several other casting rumors have also emerged, the most recent being that Jesse Plemons isin talks for a villain role in the film. Such casting rumors may suggest that Tropper’s script is in its final stages and could actually be ready to go into production. Moving forward, Levy’s untitledStar Warsfilm is a small win that Lucasfilm needs to regain the confidence of fans that they have a plan for the franchise’s future.
