Even as he ages into his 30s, actorCalum Worthymight forever have that youthful air that brings us back to simpler, pre-COVID times. Remember the days ofDisneyChannel’s hit seriesAustin & Ally, in which he co-starred across its four seasons? That cheery perplexity he brought to the YA show was perfect for his next big TV project:Netflix’s Peabody Award-winningparody-crime series,American Vandal. Two years later, Worthy would star in another crime-centric show, though much more vain in nature: Hulu’sThe Act, where he starred alongside the Emmy-nominated Joey King.

And now there’sSew Torn, Worthy’s latest starring vehicle where criminals also run amok in auniquely disjointed narrative. MovieWeb recently caught up with Worthy while he was promoting the new indie film, and the vibrant actor took time to reflect on his past crime-laced series as well — and the unlikely connection betweenVandalandThe Act.

8 New True Crime Documentaries To Stream on Netflix

These are some of the latest addictive true crime documentaries to land on Netflix in 2025.

“The storytellers behind each of those projects were so dedicated to making sure there was authenticity, and we could really feel for the characters," Worthy told MovieWeb. “They actually were quite similar in the sense that we wanted it to feel truthful and we wanted to feel empathy. And one approached it through a comedic, ironic lens, and the other approached it through a very truthful retelling, with a lot of empathy attached to it in that way. But in some ways, the approach, in a story sense, was actually the same… When I noticed that the conversations with the show runners on both projects really came from a place of empathy and caring. So it is interesting actually, that they’re similar.”

The Intensity of ‘Sew Torn’ “Starts Out at a ‘10’”

In Worthy’s latest movieSew Torn, his perpetually stressed-out character Joshua also finds himself entangled in a web of crime. Directed by Freddy Macdonald, the indie caper constantly keeps you on your toes with unique storytelling tricks, and the end result is very much heightened by the lead performances — particularly Worthy’s. He opened up to MovieWeb about how he was able topull off such an anxiety-inducingperformance inSew Torn:

“It definitely was one of the most challenging performances because [Joshua is] at a ‘10’ the entire time. Like, he basically starts out at a ‘10,’ and then… the trick was making sure you escalate it from there. But the stakes are already high… But, you know, I got to say Freddy was so great to work with because he really likes to keep actors maintaining whatever process they want to maintain during the film. And so with me, I basically just stayed in that distressed period most of the shooting day, except for, like, lunch. And I think it really helped because there’s so many shots in the film. And Sebastian [Klinger], our cinematographer, just did such an amazing job at making it feel very cinematic. And so for me, I was just like, ‘I think it’s easier if I just stay distressed the entire time.'”
