Mexican actorSergio Calderonhas sadly passed away. Reportedly, perEntertainment Weekly, Calderon died on Wednesday at a hospital in Los Angeles while surrounded by family. He had been in the hospital recently while battling pneumonia, but Calderon’s rep says that it’s not known if that was the cause of death. Calderon was 77 years old.Calderon was a veteran actor with dozens of credits on the big and small screen. He is perhaps best known for his role at Captain Vallenueva inPirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, the third installment of thePirates of the Caribbeanseries. He would reprise his role by voicing the character in the video game adaptation. Calderon would sometimes post about the movie on his Twitter account, sharing behind-the-scenes photos with co-stars like Johnny Depp and Keith Richards.
Calderon has also appeared in many other films in memorable roles. That includes a role in Sergio Leon’sDuck, You Sucker!, and more recently, playing Gustavo in the 2010 comedy sequelLittle Fockers.The actor memorably appeared in the 1979 filmThe In-Lawswith Peter Alk and Alan Arkin. He has also appeared in films likeUnder the Volcano,Blood Red,Border Shootout,The Man in the Golden Mask,The Missing, andThe Ruins. The actor also had parts in various TV shows, which includes playing different characters in three different episodes ofThe A-Team.

Calderon also had a very memorable role in the originalMen in Blackfilm, released in 1997. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film starred Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as secret agents who investigate criminal incidents related to extraterrestrials on Earth. Calderon played Jose, portrayed as a human head on a stick. It was a role that the actor as proud of, as in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary last year, Calderon had recalled working on the film with a post on Twitter, sharing an image along with his thoughts on his role in the movie. Calderon had not posted anything else on Twitter since.

Calderon reportedly retired last year after taking on three last roles. He appeared in the movieThe Seven Faces of Janefrom director Julian Acosta. Calderon would also appear in the TV showBetter Thingsas a barber followed by playing a detective in the seriesThe Resort, which serves as his final role.
Survivors include a wife, Karen Dakin; children Patrick Calderon-Dakin and Johanna Calderon-Dakin; son-in-law Raaj; and grandchildren Krishnaavi, Emiliano, and Victoria. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this painful time. May herest in peace.
