The cast ofScream 7, the upcoming sequel from the horror franchise created by Wes Craven almost 30 years ago, has just gotten bigger.CommunitystarJoel McHale, whom you’ve also seen recently in series likeThe Bear, will be joining the franchise to play Mark Evans, Sidney Prescott’s husband and one of the few characters in theScream-verse whose existence is known but has never been featured on screen. And no, he’s not Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid fromScream 3.
Per Deadline, McHale is currently shooting the film in Atlanta with his co-stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and Mason Gooding. Other cast members include Isabel May, who’s playing Mark and Sidney’s daughter, as well as performers like McKenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor and Anna Camp.

The film, which has an official release date of Jul 11, 2025, is being directed by Kevin Williamson from a script by Guy Busick. Williamson is aScreamvet, having written screenplays for 1996’sScreamand 1997’sScream 2. After a brief hiatus he took forScream 3(easily the weakest entry of them all), Williamson was back ten years after the original was released to writeScream 4, the most underrated entry of the Ghostface franchise.
Williamson was not involved in the recent revival produced under the Spyglass Media Group label. However, the decision to freshen up one of the most important modern horror franchises involved bringing back the veteran writer who also wrote ’90s horror features likeThe FacultyandI Know What You Did Last Summer. Williamson’s single credit as a director is forTeaching Mrs. Tingle, a dark comedy thriller that went by unnoticed in the late ’90s and which had a poor critical reception. We only hope that he does better.

Is It Time To Get Excited About ‘Scream 7’?
There are no more details about Kevin Williamson’sScream 7. We know Sidney’s returning after being absent inScream VI, legacy characters like Gale Weathers and Chad Meeks-Martin are also coming back, and Ghostface will also terrorize a fresh set of victims. But nothing more than that. There isn’t a lot to get excited about the film, especially because it seems to be rooted in a complete rebranding that involved awkward, controversial removals. By now, all we have is the casting, but so far, it looks pretty good.
10 All-Time Best Cameos in the Scream Movies
The spectacular meta-universe that is the Scream franchise is famous for its cameos. These are the all-time best.
McHale’s addition to the cast could mean several things. He could be introduced as an important character who Sidney will rely on. Or perhaps he will be the man behind the Ghostface mask, and we’re already being tricked. One thing’s for sure, though: Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid still hasn’t been invited to reappear in the franchise, which is kind of odd considering he was a great companion to Sidney inScream 3. Now that Sidney appears to have found her other half in the other Mark (that’s seriously icky, Sid), we don’t see how Dempsey will return.

However, it’s theScreamuniverse, and anything could happen. From Kincaid showing up to play a detective once again, toStu Macher making the comebackeveryone has been waiting for since he was killed with a TV set in 1996’sScream.
