Netflix has just reeleased the official trailer for the adult animated and live action hybrid series,Saturday Morning All Star Hits.Kyle Mooneyhas teamed up with his creative partners and longtime friends to celebrate to hysterical results the 80s and 90s offerings on TV on Saturaday mornings. From the VHS quality of the program to the population of archetypal characters of the time, Mooney captures the space in time, warts and all.

TheNetflixofficial synopsis reads, “Wildly irreverent and slightly disturbing, this adult animation, live-action hybrid celebrates the campy, Saturday-morning shows of the ’80s and ’90s.” Teaming up again with childhood friend Dave McCary, who directed Mooney’s first featureBrigsby Bear, it seems we are diving, once again, into the weird and sentimental self-proclaimed obsessed minds of the duo, centering on their passion for 80s and 90s culture. Though both creators were born in the mid-80s, they found thier way to era and its offering through video tapes of their older siblings.

The 2017 film,Brigsby Bear, starring Mooney and directed by McCary brought their love of the era to the silverscreen. The dramatic comedy follows a man who sets out to make a movie of the only TV show he has ever known (Brigsby Bear), after being freed from his life in an underground bunker. Speaking of his early introduction from his brothers, Mooney explains, “I’m kind of an obsessive person about TV shows. When I was a kid I was really into the shows my older brothers were into. I got all the action figures handed down to me, but I couldn’t go to the store to buy new ones because they were discontinued, they didn’t exist anymore. But when the internet came, when I was in the fifth or sixth grade, all of a sudden you could pull up a clip from an opening theme song to a show that hadn’t aired in years. In those early days of America Online, I was definitely trying to connect on some level with people who were into similar things.”

His brothers passed the torch.“They encouraged it, but they’d also outgrown it. I was, to a degree, left to discover stuff on my own. We hadVHS tapesthat they would tape off the TV ofHe-ManorTransformers. I would watch them over and over and obsess over them. Not just the shows, but the commercial for breakfast cereal or whatever it was. Now we all have an appreciation for these things and it’s a constant text and email chain: ‘Remember this thing from our childhood?'”

Saturday Night Live

From the aesthetic, to the characters, to the tone, Kyle Mooney and Dave McCary seem to have captured the essence of the recipe that continues to baffle people not of the time, but that also has inspired countless remakes, reboots, spin-offs, reimaginings, and homages, some of which are killing it in the theaters presently. Kyle Mooney is currently playing and creating original content onSNL, with 8 years under his belt; no small feat for the ever-churning cast.

Saturday Morning All Star Hitscomes to Netflix December 10.
