During a recent interview withVultureto chat about his long-running career in the entertainment industry, starSamuel L. Jacksondiscussed his 1996 film,The Long Kiss Goodnightand revealed that he wouldn’t mind coming back for a follow-up to the action movie.
The Long Kiss Goodnightstars Geena Davis as Samantha Caine (aka Charly) and Samuel L. Jackson as Mitch Henessey. The film follows Samantha, a suburban mom with amnesia who hires a private detective (played by Jackson) to look into her past. As Samantha experiences unexpected memories and skills she eventually learns that she was previously a government assassin.
During his interview with the outlet, Jackson talked about working withfilmmaker Renny Harlin on 1999 horror movieDeep Blue Sea, in which the actor plays Russell Franklin, a character who quickly ends up getting devoured by DNA-altered sharks. ThePulp Fictionstar then reflected on his work in the Finnish director’s mystery film and revealed how he ended up getting the part of Mitch inThe Long Kiss Goodnight.
Jackson told the outlet, “I readLong Kissand I kept asking my people to get me in to read for this role. But the studio was like, ‘No.’ ‘Man, what the f***?’ They wouldn’t see me.”

TheSnakes on a Planestar continued, “And I went to a party somewhere. Renny and Geena Davis were there. I said to Renny, ‘Hey man, why won’t you let me read for your movie?’ He’s like, ‘Let you read for my movie?’ I said, ‘Yeah.The Long Kiss Goodnight, they won’t let me come in.’ He said, ‘You want be in the movie?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘You’re in the movie.’ ‘The f*** out of here. Really?’ And sure enough, next week I was in the movie. I never auditioned, never read, never did anything.”
After being asked why the studio wouldn’t have wanted theSecret Invasionstar to appear in the film, Jackson replied, “Because there was a greater romantic thing happening between Mitch and Charly Baltimore. He literally fed her in the first script. Or she fed him. She gets off of that wheel, after killing that dude, and she finds me down in that basement and I’m freezing. In the original script, she strips herself naked and wraps herself around me.”
The Hateful Eightstar went on to share his thoughts on the film and his character, declaring, “Long Kissis an awesome movie. And I still love Mitch Hennessy. I’d do a Mitch Hennessy movie in a minute.”
Jackson even offered a potential idea for a sequel, saying, “Maybe the daughter grows up and she wants to know more about her mom and she takes on the whole mantle of who Charly Baltimore was.”
