Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will be heading intoSecret Invasionwithout the help of the mighty Avengers, but with Earth’s heroes on his Christmas card list, the question is why? Well, Jackson has now explained more about Fury’s reasons for not involving his superhero initiative in the battle against the Skrull’s invasion of the planet. While discussing the upcoming Disney+ MCU series withVanity Fair, Jackson said:

“What’s not doing is call calling in his super friends. So that’s part of the whole dilemma. I mean people want them and he’s not bringing them. You’ll find that out. There’s a very good reason he’s holding back.”

There have been a few reasons touted around on social media as to why Fury is so inclined to keep the Avengers out of the game on this one. Some believe that the Skrulls will have infiltrated the Avengers groups and that some of Earth’s superheroes could be Skrulls in disguise, making it difficult for Fury to know who to trust. Others believe the story could take place during the Blip when the Avengers team was not exactly in a good place to do heroic things. However, as Jackson has suggested, all will become pretty clear once the series arrives in the summer.

Secret Invasion Will Be Marvel’s First ‘Event’ Series

Although we are now two years into the MCU’s Disney+ output,Secret Invasionis the first live-action project to be labeled as an “event.” This follows the introduction of Marvel Special Presentations last year withWerewolf by NightandGuardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. While both of these short, stand-alone projects worked well and gained the type of praise that has been lacking in some of the recent MCU movie output, it is hard to say exactly what makesSecret Invasionworthy of the “event” branding. What we do know is that series will feature a heavy crossover of characters from Marvel’s sprawling history and will see its story leak over intoThe Marvelslater this year, as well as potentially having an impact onArmor Warsas well.

Along with the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders reprises her role as Maria Hill, and Martin Freeman is back as ex-CIA agent Everett Ross. In addition, Don Cheadle makes another appearance as James Rhodes, aka War Machine, Ben Mendelssohn brings back Skrull Talos, and franchise newcomer Emilia Clarke plays his daughter G’iah. Another new Marvel inductee is Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, who plays MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth.

The six-part series was recently revealed to bepremiering on Disney+ on June 21, but that debut has now been replaced on the platform with the ever-annoying “Coming Soon” banner. Of course, with the many recent changes and delays seen with recent Marvel projects, it is not surprising that there is a hesitancy to give an exact release date until it is beyond doubt. Whether the June date holds is yet to be seen, but withLokiseason 2 reportedly coming in early September,Secret Invasionsurely won’t be pushed back any later.
