Like many a comic book casting before it, the news thatTwilightstar Robert Pattinson had been chosen to take on the mantle of The Dark Knight left to many a smashed keyboard and broken laptop screen. Fans across the globe were quick to dismiss the casting announcement as the worst thing since unsliced bread and within seconds petitions had cropped up all over the internet calling for the decision to be reversed and a new Batman to be found. Well, one man who is very on board with Pattinson’s leading role in the upcomingThe Batmanis director Bill Condon.

Whilst promoting his latest movie, the crime thrillerThe Good Liar, Condon discussed working withRobert Pattinsonon the sparkly-vampire seriesTwilight, and his thoughts on the actor entering the comic book movie realm as the iconic billionaire with a passion for bats. Bill Condon working with Robert Pattinson on the franchise ending double-headerTwilight: Breaking DawnPart I and II.

“I think it’s all brilliant, including going back to ‘The Batman’. I think that’s great. Because he was so conflicted about it the first time it happened. He understood the opportunity that those movies gave him. But it was also frustrating and he had no comfort with the idea of being some kind of heartthrob. But I think now what’s so exciting is, look, the Batman as a superhero character has been interesting in movie, after movie, after movie. And I know he’s gonna do the same thing with it.”

DirectorBill Condontalks openly about Pattinson’s initial struggle with the overwhelming fame that came with starring in theTwilightseries, and states that the young actor will continue to bring an interesting take on the character inThe Batman, as had been done in the movies before. Condon then went on to discuss the actor’s more recent roles in the likes of Netflix’sThe Kingand the black and white psychological horrorThe Lighthouse.

“It comes on the heels of, just this fall, between ‘The King’ and ‘The Lighthouse’. It’s remarkable. The thing that I find exciting is he just seems to be getting better and better. And more than anything, committed.

The director declares his admiration forRobert Pattinson’s continuing dedication to his craft, as well as the fact that he seems to be getting better and better with each new role. If this continues then by the time he gets toThe BatmanPattinson could well have become the greatest actor of all time.

Sadly we will have to wait until June 2021 to seeRobert Pattinson’s take on The Caped Crusader, but if he continues to commit and improve then it should provide something very special indeed. Until then, Condon’s new film,The Good Liar, stars a pair of bonafide Hollywood legends in Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen, reminding us all that the director knows a great actor when he sees one.
