In 2014, a year afterRiddickhit the theater screens across the world,Vin Dieseldeclared that the franchise was still quite active. And that Universal Pictures was mulling over a possible fourth live-action chapter in thissci-fi saga. Now, a year later, the actor/producer has confirmed thatRiddick 4is moving forward with a new title. That’s not all. There will also be a TV show spinoff. This is what theFurious 7star had to say about the continuation of this franchise on hisInstagram.
“Last night Our company had a party to launch Our TV division. Very exciting. MERC CITY is a show that will follow theMercsand BountyHuntersof the Riddick Universe. Next Month, DT begins writing the next Chapter in the Chronicles of Riddick… FURIA.”
There is nothing known about The Chronicles of Riddick: Furia at this time, plot wise. Though some may mistake it for the similar soundingMad Max: Furiosa, which has never been given a green light at Warner Bros. This is also the first we’re hearing about theMerc CityTV show. And while he doesn’t claim as such, we can only imagine that there will be room for Vin Diesel to make an appearance on this sci-fi action series.
In terms of the DT Vin Diesel mentions in his post, he is speaking of directorDavid Twohy. The filmmaker has written and directed all three of the previous live-actionRiddickmovies, which include 2000’sPitch Black, 2004’sThe Chronicles of Riddickand 2013’sRiddick. He is also behind the twoRiddickanimated shorts, which includeThe Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, which was released in 2004. And Riddick: Blindsided, which arrived in conjunction with the previous movie sequel.
The entireRiddicksaga has only ever pulled in moderate box office numbers, and has never been considered ablockbuster success. But over the years it has become a bonafide cult sensation. So far, the entire franchise has only pulled in a total of $267 million worldwide for all three live-action movies. The series is notable for bringing in other popular genre andcult favorites, includingKeith David,Katee Sackhoff,Dave Bautista,Karl Urbanand evenJudi Dench. There is no set release date for either The Chronicles of Riddick: Furia or Merc City. What do you think? Do you like this plan?
