Fans have just received their first look at the upcoming film that will reuniteStar WarsactorsOscar IsaacandMark Hamillin a not-so-distant galaxy a long, long time ago.The King of Kingsis an animated feature that puts a somewhat sci-fi twist on the story of the original miracle worker, and the film’s official teaser trailer reveals an initial glimpse of Isaac’s transformation into the Son of God Himself.

Directed by renowned VFX specialist Seong-ho Jang, and produced by South Korea’s Mofac Animation,The King of Kingsadds an intriguing element of time travel to an otherwise familiar Biblical tale. Based off of a Charles Dickens short story, the film follows none other than the 19th century author himself — along with his son, Walter — as they inadvertently stumble upon a multidimensional portal and end up coming face-to-face with history’s most talked-about celebrity. Jesus isn’t the only Biblical figure Dickens and Walter encounter, however — they’re also treated to an entourage of 27 C.E.’s biggest hits, including Mary, Joseph, Jesus' disciples, and even some of his enemies.

‘The King of Kings’Draws Inspiration From a Little-Known Short Story

Although the combination of time travel and Jesus Christ may seem a little unorthodox,The King of Kingsis actually based off of a posthumously published Charles Dickens short story,The Life of Our Lord. Written for his children, and read aloud to them annually as a Christmas tradition, the story follows Dickens, his son, and their cat Willa as they experience the story of Jesus’s life. However,The Life of Our Lordremained largely unknown until 1934, when it was published six decades after Dickens’ death. Since the story was always intended to be told to children, the animated adaptation is a perfect modern medium to continue Dickens' beloved tradition of sharing his faith.
