Back in November, CBS made the announcement that sci-fi fans had been waiting years for, revealing that the iconicStar Trekfranchise is returning to the small screen with a new TV series. Earlier today at the CBS Upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall in New York, CBS unveiled the logo for the newStar Trekwithin the television series' first-ever promotional video. This highly-anticipated program will premiere inJanuary 2017.

The newStar Trek TV series, produced by CBS Television Studios, will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network in January 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access. The next chapter of theStar Trekfranchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International. The first trailer, which debuted on the CBS YouTube page, doesn’t reveal any actual footage from the show, but it does tease new crews, new villains and new worlds.

The show will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previousStar Trektelevision series. Thenew Star Trekwill introduce never-before-seen characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

The original series only ran for three seasons, but became a cultural phenomenon, spawning a slew of movies and spinoff TV shows such asStar Trek: The Animated Series,Star Trek: The Next Generation,Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,Star Trek: VoyagerandStar Trek: Enterprise. The franchise was revitalized on the big screen in 2009 withJ.J. Abrams’Star Trekand its 2013 follow-upStar Trek Into Darkness. The franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with a new adventure debuting on the big screen as well,Star Trek Beyond, slated for release on July 22.
