As the actors and writers strike for better wages and protections artifical intelligence,Netflixhas unveiled a new, high-paying A.I. job. To be specific, the company is looking to pay someone $900,000 to be a product manager for the Machine Learning Platform (MLP). According toNetflix Jobs, the new post is intended “to increase the leverage of our Machine Learning Platform.“Here’s what that job would entail, according to the same website:

For frame of reference, according toThe Intercept, 87% of actors earn less than $26,000. This might also be a good time to remind you how one of the things the actors are striking against is background actors getting scanned, paid for one day of work, and receiving no compensation for any future use of their likeness. A move that’s been compared to a recurrent subplot inBojack HorsemanandBlack MirrorSeason Six episode,“Joan Is Awful.”

“So $900k/yr per soldier in their godless AI army when that amount of earnings could qualify thirty-five actors and their families for SAG-AFTRA health insurance is just ghoulish. Having been poor and rich in this business, I can assure you there’s enough money to go around; it’s just about priorities,” said Rob Delaney, one of the actors in the Black Mirror episode.

More About AI At Netflix

According to the Netflix website, the streaming service has used its machine learning in a wide variety of ways. Such as “to continually improve our member experience and optimize the Netflix service end-to-end.” While it’s now being applied to content creation, it used to be primarily applied to recommendations.

“Historically, personalization has been the most well-known area, where machine learning powers our recommendation algorithms. We’re also using machine learning to help shape our catalog of movies and TV shows by learning characteristics that make content successful. We use it to optimize the production of original movies and TV shows in Netflix’s rapidly growing studio.”

The AI technology has already been used for the Spanish reality dating series “Deep Fake Love,” where the contestants faces are scanned and used to created simulations. Another area that Netflix is looking to expand on there use of technology is generative AI, which The Intercept describes thusly.

“Generative AI is the type of AI that can produce text, images, and video from input data — a key component of original content creation but which can also be used for other purposes like advertising. Generative AI is distinct from older, more familiar AI models that provide things like algorithmic recommendations or genre tags. "
