TheAssassin’s Creedfranchise is getting a redo in live-action, and Netflix has moved quickly to assemble a team of veteran television writers for their upcoming streaming series adaptation. The best-selling action adventure franchise famously got a feature film released in theaters in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender, but it proved to be another misstep in the video game movie genre. The streamer looks torewrite history with their new live-action series, which will be spearheaded by aWestworldalum.
Nexus Point News (via the Writer’s Guild of America) reports that Roberto Patino, an executive producer forWestworldand the showrunner for HBO’sDMZ, will act as executive producer and co-showrunner for Netflix’sAssassin’s Creedalongside David Wiener (Halo). Joining them is an impressive list of producers and writers, as seen below. As of this writing, it is unclear what stage of development the project is in. However, the upcoming series is being listed for the 2025-2026 season, which could meanAssassin’s Creedis headed to Netflix sooner than many expected. The project was first announced in 2020, but it seems to be finally coming together five years later.

Netflix’s Hit Action Adventure Series With a Fresh RT Score Gets an Unexpected Season 3 Update
An actor from the upcoming second season might’ve let it slip that a third installment is starting production soon.
It’s been an uneventful five years for Netflix’sAssassin’s Creed,to say the least. In 2020, a partnership between the streamer and Ubisoft, the game developer behind the hit franchise, was announced. The plan was to develop three different projects, two animated and one in live-action. None have come to fruition to this day. Meanwhile, Jeb Stuart, the former showrunner behind the live-actionAssassin’s Creed, revealed that he had departed the series back in 2023. It seems the separation was amicable, while it was clear that writers were still hard at work on the adaptation.

“I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that’s fair. I know it’s going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it’s a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides.”
Michael Fassbender’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Flopped, but Found New Life on Streaming
In 2016, one of the most popular video game franchises of all time got a feature-length film directed by Justin Kurzel (The Order) and starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael K. Williams. For all intents and purposes,Assassin’s Creedseemed like a slam-dunk win for a genre that still struggled to find its footing. However, the result was nothing short of disappointing. The film has a 19% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it a 42% on the Popcornmeter scale.Assassin’s Creedgrossed $240 million at the box office on a $125 million production budget, not counting any additional marketing costs. It failed to jumpstart a franchise and further propagated the belief that video game adaptations were simply not meant to be.
All that being said, what is dead may never die.Assassin’s Creedrose from the ashes and into the streaming world, becominga hit on Maxearlier this year. The recent video game adaptation boom has allowed for a reevaluation of previous films and TV projects. And whileAssassin’s Creedmay still not be remembered very fondly, it can be an enjoyable, turn-your-brains-off adventure that probably takes far too many detours from the source material. Featuring an original story,Assassin’s Creedfollows Cal Lynch / Aguilar (Fassbender) as he learns the way of the assassin brotherhood in order to fight the Templar Order.
