Christopher McQuarrie, the director behind the latest era ofMission: Impossiblemovies, including the finaleMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, is one ofTom Cruise’sstrongest allies, and has now offered major updates regarding bothTop Gun 3andDays of Thunder 2. McQuarrie hasn’t just directed Cruise in the beloved spy franchise, but he also has writing credits onTop Gun: Maverick. Naturally, he will be involved in the upcoming sequel, and while updates have been pretty lukewarm at best, McQuarrie now claims that they have finally cracked the stories for bothTop Gun 3andDays of Thunder 2.
While promoting the latest adventures of Ethan Hunt, McQuarrie appeared on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, which is hosted by Josh Horowitz. AlthoughMission: Impossibletook up most of the conversation, Horowitz used the opportunity to inquire about two of Cruise’s most interesting projects. First, the host asked McQuarrie ifTop Gun 3was harder to crack thanTop Gun: Maverick, and the writer/director offered an exciting update:

“No, it’s already in the bag. I already know what it is. It wasn’t hard. I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to walk from. You walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?’ and Ehren Kruger [Top Gun: Maverick co-writer] pitched something, and we had one conversation about it. The framework is there, so it’s not hard to crack [it].”
Top Gun Maverick: 10 Reasons it Surpasses the Original
As one of the biggest action films in recent cinematic history, here’s why Top Gun: Maverick ended up better than the original.
McQuarrie continued, revealing that, despite what seemed like a completearc for Rooster and Maverick’s relationship, the upcoming sequel could be all about them again. Horowitz cut to the chase and asked McQuarrie if he was going to directTop Gun 3, replacing Joseph Kosinski. McQuarrie said that, for now, at least, he hadn’t given this any thought. However, he confirmed that he has done a lot of research on how to make a Tony Scott (original director of 1986’sTop Gun) movie. Despite him staying quiet about it, he also talked about Cruise’s upcoming sports drama sequelDays of Thunder 2(the original 1990 film was also directed by Tony Scott), saying:

“In five seconds, I knew what the premise of the movie would be. I looked at the response to Top Gun: Maverick, and immediately turned to Tom and said, ‘Days of Thunder.'”
Christopher McQuarrie Reveals Tom Cruise Could Reprise Another of His Most Famous Roles
Revealing details ofTop Gun 3andDays of Thunder 2is exciting but expected from Christopher McQuarrie. However, he also saw the podcast as an opportunity to talk about Les Grossman, Tom Cruise’s hilarious character fromthe war comedyTropic Thunder. The 2008 film has plenty of memorable characters, but Cruise’s rendering of the foul-mouthed studio executive has been his most iconic comedy role. After the movie’s release, Cruise reprized the role for an appearance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, where he showed his dance moves the same way Grossman does in the film’s conclusion. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited a spin-off that’s never arrived.
Now, McQuarrie has discussed the possibility of a Les Grossman movie while addressing future projects, saying, “Everything will happen in one way or another, not necessarily in the time or place you think. The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so f*cking funny.” McQuarrie also said this about Grossman’s possible return:

“We’re talking about it, we’re having serious conversations about it, and how best to do it.”
