Will this year’s eighthMission: Impossiblemovie,Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, actually live up to its title and be the final outing in the iconic action franchise? Whilethe recent trailerfor the movie certainly hinted that this is the case, with the footage teasing all manner of Easter eggs and finding Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt asking his team to trust him “one last time,” it has not been confirmed that this will indeed be the last hurrah for Hunt. Now, directorChristopher McQuarriehas chimed in… and suggests that, yes, this is the end of the line.
Speaking withEmpire, McQuarrie calledMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningthe “conclusion” to Ethan Hunt’s arc. Which first began in Brian De Palma’sMission: Impossibleway, way back in 1996.

“It is, I hope, the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc. I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.”
Tom Cruisehimself has also offered his two cents, but while McQuarrie lets a little more of the bag, the Hollywood icon decided to keep things much closer to the chest.

“You gotta see the movie. It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment, because it really is something that you have to experience. [It’s] an epic, emotional journey of the entire franchise. It’s Homeric.”
Will the ‘Mission: Impossible’ Franchise Continue Without Tom Cruise?
While it’s, well, impossible to imagine a world in which Tom Cruise no longer risks his life in the name of our entertainment as Ethan Hunt, theMission: Impossiblefranchise surely has to come to an end eventually. As all good things must do. The actor has several other major projects currently in the pipeline, including a mysterious new movie fromThe Revenantdirector Alejandro G. Iñárritu and a reunion withEdge of Tomorrow’sDoug Liman for a movie that will actually see Cruisehead off into space.
Of course, whileMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningmay be the end of Ethan Hunt’s arc, there are ways to continue the franchise without him. A new character could be given the lead role in Hunt’s absence, something which the seriesattempted to do with Jeremy Renner’sIMF agent William Brandt. CouldMCU star Hayley Atwellbe about to take over from Cruise? We’ll just have to wait and see.
