The times are changing, and Hollywood is getting a lot of pressure to be more progressive. Beinggayis no longer a huge taboo like it used to be, and there is a demand to see more prominent characters with varying sexuality. And now Disney is getting some outside pressure to do just that. A hashtag recently surfaced and started trending on Twitter urging the studio to #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend.
Chris Evans’Captain Americais far and away one of the most popular characters in the Marvel lineup, especially after the massive success ofCaptain America: Civil War, which some have called the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Though, he hasn’t exactly had a lot of luck in the love department on screen. He had a lot of chemistry with Peggy Carter but that was cut very short inThe First Avengerand spoiler, she is dead now. Granted, he did finally kiss Agent 13 inCivil War, who happens to be Peggy’s niece, but this isn’t about how that may or may not be creepy. This is about getting Cap a boyfriend, according to theLA Times.
As popular as the movement to get Steve Rogers locking lips and fingers with another dude from the MCU is, many of the fans are just having fun with the idea. As many were quick to point out, he basically already has a boyfriend in the form of Bucky, but he is unfortunately unavailable at the moment thanks to the events ofCivil War, plus long distance relationships really never work out anyway. As for who could actually make for a good boyfriend for Rogers? Well, that is an entirely different question, but the Marvel Universe is large, and there is bound to be a few good options.
Oddly enough, this wasn’t even the first time Disney received some pressure to have one of their characters get into a relationship with someone of the same sex. A hashtag also surfaced earlier this month that was encouraging the studio to giveFrozenstarIdina Menzel’s charcter Elsa a girlfriend in the upcomingFrozen 2.#GiveElsaAGirlfriendactually got a lot of traction andIdina Menzelherself got on board with the idea publically. This all comes afterGLAADsingled out Disney and Paramount Pictures for not having anyLGBT charactersin any of their movies throughout 2015.
“I think it’s great that she’s stirring it up. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out. No matter what, (Elsa) changed my life.”
Disney of course owns Marvel and ultimately it will be their call if that is something they wanted to commit to on the big screen. As much traction as this fan campaign may get, with how vastly popular and wide reaching the Marvel Cinematic Universe films are, it would surely rattle some feathers. Not to mention all of the adoring female fans whose hopes ofChris Evanseventually confessing his undying love for them would very suddenly be dashed.
