Netflix’sA Man on the Insidehas gained a woman on the inside, as Mary Steenburgen (pictured below) has officially joined the cast of Season 2 in a key role, starring opposite her real-life husband, Ted Danson, who is reprising his role as Charles Nieuwendyk, a retiree-turned-private-investigator. According to Variety, Steenburgen will play a character called Mona Margadoff, described as “a former musician who factors heavily in the case Charles is trying to solve,” as he gets up to even more sleuthing shenanigans in the sophomore season of the critically acclaimed comedy series.

This is not the first time that Danson and Steenburgen have shared the screen together. The couple, who are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary later this year, previously starred in HBO’sCurb Your Enthusiasmand headlined the 1996 comedy seriesInk. Steenburgen has also appeared in several further TV shows that Danson has featured in over the years, includingThe Good Place,Mr. Mayor,Becker, andBored to Death, in addition to a wide variety of other roles in projects without her husband, both on the big screen and small screen.

The new sitcom from ‘The Good Place’ creator has roots in real senior-centric espionage.

A Man on the Insidehails from Mike Schur, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Morgan Sackett, David Miner, Maite Alberdi, Marcela Santibañez, Julie Goldman, and Christopher Clements. The show’s senior-centric espionage narrative is based on a true story, which was the subject ofa 2020 documentary calledThe Mole Agent.That fly-on-the-wall filmcenters around a private investigator named Rómulo, who hires an elderly man called Sergio to go undercover in a Chilean nursing home where the mother of a concerned client resides.

‘A Man on the Inside’ Drew Praise From the People on the Outside

A Man on the Insidepremiered its eight-episode first season on Netflix in Nov. 2024 and quickly garnered rave reviews from the people on the outside, aka those watching at home. It debuted atthe top of the streaming chartsand also earned a near-perfect 96% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 91% audience rating. In particular, people praised Danson’s performance in the lead role and the series overall for its warmth and charm, with some choosing to place it in the “cozy mystery” category next to the likes of Hulu’sOnly Murders in the Building.

The series received a swift Season 2 renewal from Netflix in December, prompting Schur to declarehis excitement about its returnto Netflix Tudum. He jovially called Danson “a young up-and-comer” and publicly applauded the “exceptional team of talented and lovely people” that helped to bring the show to life. The second season is slated to begin production in April, so it’s not surprising that casting announcements have started to be made. Steenburgen is the first newcomer to the ensemble, which, in Season 1, featured the likes of Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, and Stephanie Beatriz. It’s currently unclear if they will be back for Charles' next outing.
