At present, Andy Serkis is the only confirmed cast member, with fans left wondering whether the likes of Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen will reprise their respective roles as Gandalf and Aragorn.Mortensen has reportedly discussed the projectwith writer Philippa Boyens, with Aragorn playing a crucial role in the prequel. “Honestly, that’s entirely going to be up to Viggo, collaboratively and we are at a very early stage,” she revealed. “I’ve spoken to Viggo, Andy [Serkis] has spoken to him, Peter [Jackson] has spoken to him, we’ve all spoken to each other and honestly, I cannot imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it will be completely and entirely up to Viggo.”

McKellen, meanwhile, has teased his possible return, saying, “Enthusiasm forThe Lord of the Ringsshows no sign of abating … I can’t tell you any more than that. I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved, and they hope that I’ll be playing him. When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So, they better be quick.” No doubt getting the original stars back would be hugely exciting for fans.
