In the upcoming second season ofLoki, a surprising twist in Sylvie’s narrative arc has caught the attention of fans. Sylvie, portrayed by Sophia Di Martino, finds herself working at a McDonald’s, a seemingly unexpected turn of events that holds deeper narrative significance. This creative decision, as revealed by producer Kevin Wright, stems from Sylvie’s character journey. Having been consumed by a vengeance-driven mission that spanned decades, perhaps even centuries, she had left her little room to contemplate what comes after. However, with the conclusion of the first season’s finale, Sylvie is presented with a unique moment of opportunity.

In a recent interview withFast Company, Wright explained that during discussions with Di Martino, the notion of Sylvie’s “hunger” after killing He Who Remains became a catalyst for her unforeseen venture into the fast-food chain.

Ke Huy Quan as OB in Loki

“This character had been on a decades-long, maybe centuries-long revenge mission, and the classic trope of those stories is that it’s all-consuming and she’s not thinking about what comes next. Now she has this moment of opportunity, where is she going to go? When we stayed in the view of the character, this woman who went on the run as a child, had been running through time, a fugitive of time, living in apocalypses, never being able to relax or slow down, the novelty of walking into a 1980s McDonald’s looked appealing. You play a Little League game and go to McDonald’s. You go to a kid’s birthday party at McDonald’s. Someone like Sylvie would never have experienced that, and would be really taken by that.”

Wright also emphasized that this unexpected twist is not a mere ironic gesture but a deliberate attempt to delve into Sylvie’s experiences, providing a unique lens through which to explore her perspective and the nostalgia associated with ordinary joys.

“I was worried that McDonald’s would think we wanted to do something ironic or make fun of them. But we were selling an earnest story, a love letter to nostalgia through a character’s eyes who will see all of the novelty and joy of it.”
